Convert, edit, fix and record audio without installing an app

Audio jobs usually come at awkward moments: a lecture to record, a ringtone to cut from a song, a voice memo full of fan noise, a podcast episode that is too quiet, an M4A that a car stereo will not play. These free audio tools handle them straight from the browser. Convert between formats with the audio converter or pages such as M4A to MP3 and WAV to MP3, shrink files with the MP3 compressor, and cut, join and split with the audio cutter, audio joiner and audio splitter.

To fix the sound itself there is an audio noise remover, a loudness normalizer, a volume booster, speed and pitch changers and a silence remover. Musicians get a BPM detector, a key finder, a metronome and an online tuner, and AI tools remove vocals for karaoke or transcribe a recording. Tags and cover art are handled by the ID3 tag editor and add album art.

Everything is processed with the Web Audio and media APIs built into your browser. Recordings and files are not uploaded or stored on a server; they exist only in the tab until you download them. That matters for interviews, voice notes and unreleased music. Students, podcasters, teachers, singers, drummers, people learning an instrument and anyone who needs a quick recording on a phone or laptop can use the tools without creating an account.

Which tool do you need?

  • Record or cut. Use the voice recorder for a memo, lecture or podcast segment, or the audio recorder to capture a browser tab or mix your microphone with it. Use the audio cutter on a file you already have, to trim the ends or keep one verse of a song.
  • Wrong format or too big? MP3 plays almost everywhere; WAV and FLAC keep full quality for editing; M4A (AAC) and Opus are smaller at the same quality. The audio file size calculator shows what a bitrate means in MB.
  • Sounds bad? Remove hiss and hum first, then normalise loudness, then trim silences. For podcasts, the podcast converter does all three and writes the episode tags.
  • Audio from video. If you only need the sound of a video, extract it with video to audio or video to MP3 rather than recording the speakers, which adds room noise and lowers quality.
  • Tuner or tone generator. The tuner listens to your instrument and tells you whether to tighten or loosen the string. The tone generator plays a reference pitch, such as A at 440 Hz, which is useful for tuning by ear or for checking speakers and hearing.
  • Metronome or BPM tapper. The metronome keeps time for you at a tempo you set. The BPM tapper works the other way: tap along to a song and it tells you the tempo.

Tips for cleaner recordings

  • Allow microphone access when the browser asks; without it, the recorder and tuner cannot hear anything. You can revoke it afterwards from the padlock icon in the address bar.
  • Record in a quiet room, keep the microphone 10 to 20 cm from your mouth, and do a short test clip to check the level before the real take.
  • Wired earphones with a microphone often beat a laptop’s built-in mic, which picks up fan noise and keyboard taps.
  • Leave a second or two of silence at the start and end of a take; it is easy to trim later with the audio cutter, and it stops the first word from being clipped.
  • Not sure the microphone works at all? Try the mic test in our internet and device tools first.

Audio Tools: frequently asked questions

Where do my recordings go?

They stay in the browser tab until you press download, and are then saved to your device like any other file. Nothing is uploaded, and closing the tab discards anything you have not saved.

What format does the voice recorder save?

It uses the format your browser records natively, typically WebM on Chrome, Edge and Firefox and MP4 or similar on Safari. These play in modern media players and can be converted with desktop software if a specific format is required.

Can I cut an MP3 without losing quality?

The audio cutter decodes the file, trims it and re-encodes the result, so there is one extra encoding step. At normal settings the difference is not audible, and you keep the original untouched.

How accurate is the online tuner?

It detects pitch from the microphone and shows the deviation in cents, which is well within what a musician needs for everyday tuning. Play one clear note at a time, close to the microphone, and let it ring.

What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?

White noise has equal energy at every frequency and sounds like a hiss. Pink noise rolls off the highs so it sounds softer, like steady rain, and brown noise goes further, like a distant waterfall or a rumble. Many people find pink or brown noise easier to sleep or study to.

Will converting to MP3 lose quality?

MP3, AAC, Opus and Vorbis are lossy: they discard sound the ear is least likely to notice, so a 192–320 kbit/s MP3 sounds the same as the original to most listeners. Converting a lossy file to WAV or FLAC does not bring the lost detail back; it only makes the file bigger.

Where did the video tools go?

Video to GIF, video to audio and the other video tools now have their own section, Video Tools, with compressors, converters, trimmers, resizers and subtitle tools. Their page addresses have not changed.
