Remove silence from audio automatically
The Audio Silence Remover finds the quiet stretches in a recording and takes them out: the dead air before the first word, the long tail after the last one, and — if you like — the over-long pauses in between. You set what counts as silence and how much breathing room to keep, and the tool shows exactly what will be cut and how much time you save before you export.
It is made for spoken audio: podcasts with slow starts, lectures and meetings with long gaps, interviews, audiobook narration, dictation and voice notes. Tightening the pauses makes a recording feel more energetic and shorter without touching a single word.
Your recording stays on your device: decoding, analysis and encoding all run in the browser with Mediabunny (MPL-2.0) — and LAME (LGPL) or libFLAC (BSD) for MP3 or FLAC output — with nothing uploaded.
How to use the Audio Silence Remover
- Drop an audio file on the box or click to choose it. Its format, duration, sample rate, channels and bitrate appear with a waveform.
- Set the Silence threshold — or press Detect noise floor to set it just above the background hiss of your recording.
- Choose the Minimum silence length (pauses shorter than this are left alone) and the Keep padding to leave on each side of every cut.
- Tick where to remove silence: at the start, inside the recording, at the end. Red areas on the waveform show what goes; the stats show the time saved.
- Choose an output format and press Remove silence. Compare the players and download the result.
Audio Silence Remover features
Start, end and inside
Trim only the ends — the usual clean-up for a voice note — or also shorten every long pause in the middle.
Visible before you export
Silent stretches are shaded on the zoomable waveform, the parts to be removed are red, and the threshold is drawn as dashed lines.
Natural-sounding cuts
A padding of silence stays on each side of a cut, and every join gets a 5 ms fade so it does not click.
Ignores clicks
A mouse click, a tap on the desk or a lip smack shorter than 20 or 50 ms does not break a pause into two.
Noise-floor detection
The tool measures the quietest 10 % of the recording and sets the threshold 10 dB above it.
Time saved, up front
Number of silences removed, time saved, new length and percentage are updated as you change the settings.
How silence detection works
The recording is measured in 10 ms windows. Each window’s RMS level is compared with the threshold in dBFS (decibels below full scale, where 0 dB is the loudest possible sample). A run of quiet windows at least as long as the minimum silence length is a silence. Inside the recording, the silence is shortened to twice the padding — with 0.15 s padding, every long pause becomes 0.3 s. At the start and end only one padding is kept.
| Recording | Threshold | Minimum silence | Padding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Podcast or interview (good mic) | −45 dB | 0.6 s | 0.2 s |
| Lecture or meeting (room mic) | −38 dB | 1 s | 0.25 s |
| Voice note (phone) | −40 dB | 0.5 s | 0.15 s |
| Studio narration | −55 dB | 0.4 s | 0.12 s |
Tips for good results
- If words get clipped, lower the threshold (for example from −40 to −50 dB) or increase the padding.
- If pauses are not found, the background noise is louder than the threshold — press Detect noise floor or raise it towards −35 dB.
- Keep the minimum silence above 0.3 s for speech, or natural pauses between sentences start to disappear and the voice sounds rushed.
- To split a recording at its pauses instead, use Split Audio. To cut a specific section by hand, use the Audio Cutter.
- Record new voice notes with the Voice Recorder and tidy them here.
Audio Silence Remover FAQ
How do I remove silence from an audio file?
Drop the file here, keep the default settings or press Detect noise floor, check the red areas on the waveform and press Remove silence. Then download the shortened file.
Can I remove silence only at the beginning and end?
Yes. Untick “Inside (shorten long pauses)” and only the silence before the first sound and after the last one is trimmed.
Is this silence remover free and private?
Yes. It costs nothing, has no sign-up or watermark, and processes your recording in the browser without uploading it.
Will it cut off quiet words?
Not if the threshold is below the level of your speech. Soft consonants are protected by the padding kept on each side of every cut; increase it if word endings sound clipped.
Why does it find no silence?
Background noise such as a fan, hum or traffic can be louder than the threshold. Press Detect noise floor, or raise the threshold until the pauses are shaded.
Which format should I save as?
Same as input is usually right. For speech, MP3 at 128 kbps or Ogg (Opus) keeps files small; choose WAV or FLAC if you will edit the audio further.
