Fair ways to pick, draw, shuffle and decide

Sometimes the fairest way to decide is to leave it to chance. Who presents first, which team gets the ball, who wins the raffle, which of forty students answers the question, whether to order pizza or biryani tonight. These free random generators settle it in a way everyone can see. The random number generator draws numbers in any range with or without repeats, spin the wheel turns a list into a colourful spinner for classrooms and giveaways, and the random name picker draws one or more winners from a pasted list.

There are quick deciders for small moments, including a coin flip, a dice roller with several dice and sides, and a yes or no button, as well as practical helpers such as the team generator for splitting a group into balanced sides, the list randomizer for shuffling any order, and the lottery number generator for quick picks that fit the rules of a particular draw. Creative tools produce random names, usernames, colours, dates and PINs for games, writing and test data.

Teachers, sports coaches, event organisers, game masters, developers seeding test data and families settling arguments all use them. Every pick is made on your device using the browser’s random number source, with no account and no record kept, so a class list or a customer list pasted into a picker is never uploaded.

Choosing the right picker

  • Number or name. If the options are already numbered, such as raffle tickets or row numbers, draw a number. If you have the names themselves, paste them into the name picker or the wheel so nobody has to look up who number 27 is.
  • Wheel or list. The wheel is for moments with an audience, where the suspense is the point. The name picker is faster and can draw several winners at once without repeats.
  • Teams or shuffle. The team generator divides people into a set number of groups of equal size; the list randomizer just reorders a list, which suits presentation order or a reading list.
  • Dice or numbers. Rolling dice gives the familiar bell-shaped totals of a board game; a random number in a range gives every value an equal chance.

How random are these results?

The generators use the browser’s cryptographically secure random source, the same one used to create encryption keys, rather than a simple formula. That makes draws unpredictable and free of patterns, which is what a fair raffle or a classroom pick needs. Random does not mean evenly spread in the short run, though: three heads in a row or the same name twice in a week is normal and expected.

Two things to know when the outcome matters. First, random picks are not auditable on their own, so for a public prize draw announce the list and the number of winners beforehand and run the draw in front of witnesses or on a recorded screen. Second, no generator can predict lottery results; a quick pick simply gives you a valid combination with the same odds as any other. For the maths behind odds and combinations, the math calculators include a permutation and combination tool.

Random Generators: frequently asked questions

Is the random number generator truly random?

It uses the cryptographically secure random source built into your browser, which draws on unpredictable data from your device. For games, draws and sampling that is as random as you need; it is not a certified source for regulated gambling.

Can I remove a name after it is picked?

Yes. The name picker and the wheel can take out each winner after a draw, so the same person is not chosen twice when you are picking several winners in a row.

Can I pick several winners at once?

Yes. Set the number of winners in the random name picker and it draws them together without repeats, which is handy for giveaways with multiple prizes.

How do I split a class into equal teams?

Paste the names into the team generator, choose how many teams you want and press Generate. It shuffles the list and deals the names out evenly, so the teams differ in size by at most one.

Do the lottery numbers improve my odds of winning?

No. Every combination has exactly the same chance, so a random quick pick is neither better nor worse than numbers you choose yourself. The only advantage is avoiding common picks, which reduces the chance of sharing a prize.

Is the coin flip biased?

No. Each flip is a fresh 50/50 draw from the browser’s random source, independent of previous flips, so streaks of heads or tails are just normal chance.
