Split audio into parts — by time, by markers or at the silences
Use this free split audio tool to cut one long recording into several files. Choose how: a number of equal parts, a part every X minutes, at markers you place on the waveform, or automatically at the silences — the quickest way to turn a recording of a whole concert, a vinyl side or a set of voice memos into separate tracks.
The parts are numbered in order (recording-01.mp3, recording-02.mp3 …) and can be downloaded one by one or together as a ZIP. It works with MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, FLAC, Ogg and Opus files, and your audio stays on your device the whole time: decoding, splitting and encoding happen in your browser with the open-source Mediabunny library (MPL-2.0), plus LAME (LGPL) or libFLAC (BSD) for MP3 and FLAC parts and JSZip (MIT) for the ZIP.
How to use the Split Audio
- Drop an audio file on the box or click to choose it. Its format, length, sample rate, channels and bitrate appear with a waveform.
- Under How to split, pick Equal parts, Every X minutes, At markers or At silences, and adjust the settings. The parts table updates as you type.
- For markers, tap the waveform (or play the original) to move the playhead and press Add marker at playhead. Drag markers on the waveform or type exact times.
- For silences, set the threshold and minimum pause length; dashed lines show the threshold on the waveform.
- Choose an output format and press Split audio. Play any part, download it, or press Download all as ZIP.
Split Audio features
Four ways to split
Equal parts (2–200), fixed lengths in minutes, hand-placed markers, or automatic detection of pauses.
Silence detection that ignores clicks
The level is measured every 10 ms; pauses shorter than your minimum are ignored, and so are clicks and pops shorter than 20 ms inside a pause.
Trim pauses at the edges
When splitting at silences, each part can lose the dead air at its start and end, keeping a natural quarter-second of pause.
Waveform with zoom and touch markers
Zoom in to place a split exactly between two words; markers can be dragged with a finger on phones and tablets.
Numbered files and ZIP
Parts keep the original name plus a two- or three-digit number, so they sort correctly in any music player or folder.
Sample-accurate
Parts meet exactly at the split points: no audio is lost or duplicated between them, and lengths are exact for WAV and FLAC.
Which split mode should I use?
| Mode | Best for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Equal parts | Sharing a long file in pieces of the same size | A 2-hour lecture in 4 parts of 30 minutes |
| Every X minutes | Upload limits and fixed-length chunks | Parts of 10 minutes for a transcription service |
| At markers | Splitting where you choose | Separating the interview from the intro music |
| At silences | Recordings with clear pauses between items | A concert, a vinyl rip or a stack of voice notes into tracks |
Getting silence detection right
A pause is any stretch quieter than the threshold for at least the minimum silence length. Levels are in dBFS, where 0 dB is the loudest a file can be. Studio recordings are often silent below −60 dB, while a phone recording in a room may never drop below −45 dB because of background hiss — so if nothing is found, raise the threshold towards −35 dB. If it splits inside songs or sentences, lower the threshold or lengthen the minimum silence: gaps between album tracks are often about 2 seconds, while pauses inside speech are usually shorter than a second.
Shortest part stops a cough or a short gap near a split from creating a tiny extra file. The split is placed in the middle of each pause, or, with trimming on, each part ends a quarter of a second into the pause and the next starts a quarter of a second before the sound returns.
Tips
- For lossless parts choose WAV or FLAC; MP3 and AAC parts are re-encoded and each starts with a few milliseconds of encoder delay.
- Need to join some parts back together? Use the Audio Joiner. To keep just one section of a file, the Audio Cutter is quicker.
- To remove pauses instead of splitting at them, use the Audio Silence Remover. Splitting a video? Try Split Video.
Split Audio FAQ
How do I split an MP3 into parts?
Drop the MP3 here, choose Equal parts and the number of parts (or another mode), press Split audio and download the parts or the ZIP. Keep the format on Same as input to get MP3 files back.
Can it split a recording into tracks automatically?
Yes. Choose At silences: the tool finds the pauses between songs or items and splits in the middle of each one. Adjust the threshold and minimum pause length if it finds too many or too few.
Is this audio splitter free and private?
Yes. There is no sign-up or watermark, and the file never leaves your device — all splitting is done in your browser.
How long can the file be?
Hours-long recordings work on a computer. Files that would need more than about 700 MB of memory once decoded are read again from the original while writing the parts, so memory stays low; phones may still be slower.
Will splitting reduce the quality?
WAV and FLAC parts are lossless. MP3, M4A and Ogg parts are re-encoded, which loses a little quality; choose a bitrate at least as high as the original to keep it inaudible.
Why does the Every X minutes mode make a short last part?
The file’s length is rarely an exact multiple of the part length, so the last part holds whatever is left over.
