FLAC to MP3 Converter

Make MP3 copies of FLAC albums for phones, cars and players — 320 kbps LAME, tags and album art kept.

Drop FLAC files here or click to choose FLAC (16/24-bit, up to 192 kHz) · a whole album at once · nothing is uploaded

Tags and album art move from the FLAC’s Vorbis comments to ID3v2. Hi-res FLAC above 48 kHz is resampled to 44.1 or 48 kHz, the highest rates MP3 supports. Keep your FLAC originals — an MP3 can’t be turned back into lossless.

Runs entirely in your browser — your audio is never uploaded. The Mediabunny engine (MPL-2.0), the LAME, FLAC and AAC encoders (LGPL/BSD) and the Vorbis encoder (BSD) are downloaded once from a CDN, only when needed.

Convert FLAC to MP3 and keep your tags

This FLAC to MP3 converter makes compact MP3 copies of lossless FLAC files. An album that takes about 300 MB as FLAC fits in roughly 100 MB as 320 kbps MP3, or 60 MB at 192 kbps, and plays on every phone, car stereo and portable player made in the last twenty-five years. Titles, artists, album names, track numbers and album art come along automatically.

Encoding uses LAME, the reference open-source MP3 encoder, and it all runs in your browser: your music collection is never uploaded, and converting a whole album is a matter of dropping its files at once and downloading a ZIP.

Starting from FLAC is the best way to make MP3s. Because the source is lossless, the MP3 encoder works from the full original signal, so even 192 kbps files sound excellent — unlike MP3s converted from another lossy format.

How to use the FLAC to MP3 Converter

    1. Drop your FLAC files — a whole album at once is fine — on the upload area.
    2. Pick a Bitrate (constant): 320 kbps (selected) for the best MP3 quality, 192 kbps to save space on a phone.
    3. Check that Copy tags and cover art is ticked so the MP3s keep their album information.
    4. Press Convert to MP3. Each file shows its progress and final size.
    5. Use Download all (ZIP) to save the album in one go.

    FLAC to MP3 Converter features

LAME at up to 320 kbps

Constant-bitrate MP3 from 64 to 320 kbps — 320 kbps is the highest bitrate the MP3 standard allows.

    Full tag transfer

Vorbis comments (TITLE, ARTIST, ALBUM, TRACKNUMBER, DATE, GENRE…) and the FLAC picture block become ID3v2 tags with embedded cover art.

    Hi-res handled

24-bit and 88.2–192 kHz FLAC files are converted; MP3’s 48 kHz ceiling means they are resampled to 44.1 or 48 kHz automatically.

    Multichannel to stereo

5.1 FLAC files are mixed down to stereo, since MP3 holds at most two channels.

    Album-sized batches

Convert dozens of tracks in one pass and download them together as a ZIP.

Picking a bitrate for FLAC sources

An MP3’s size depends only on bitrate and length, so these figures apply to any 45-minute album. The FLAC originals typically take 230–340 MB for the same 45 minutes, depending on the music.

    BitrateAlbum of 45 minutesGood for
320 kbps≈ 103 MBThe best MP3 can do; a safe choice for music you care about
    256 kbps≈ 82 MBNear-transparent for almost everyone
192 kbps≈ 62 MBPhones and cars, where space matters more
128 kbps≈ 41 MBAudiobooks, spoken word, background music

    From hi-res FLAC to MP3

Many downloads are “hi-res” FLAC at 24-bit and 96 or 192 kHz. MP3 can’t store sample rates above 48 kHz, so the converter resamples them: 88.2 and 176.4 kHz go to 44.1 kHz, 96 and 192 kHz to 48 kHz, keeping the conversion ratio simple. It uses a long windowed-sinc filter, so the ultrasonic noise common in hi-res recordings is removed rather than folded back into the audible range. MP3 has no bit depth of its own — the encoder works on the decoded signal at full precision — so 24-bit sources need no special handling.

    Keep the FLACs

MP3 is for listening on the go; FLAC is the master. Converting an MP3 back to FLAC can never restore what was removed, as MP3 to FLAC explains, so keep the lossless originals and make new MP3s from them whenever you need a different bitrate. For iPhones, M4A (AAC) from the audio converter is an alternative that sounds slightly better at the same size; to store WAV recordings losslessly, use WAV to FLAC.

    FLAC to MP3 Converter FAQ

How do I convert FLAC to MP3?

Drop the FLAC files here, keep 320 kbps or pick another bitrate, and press Convert to MP3. Several files can be downloaded together as a ZIP.

What is the best bitrate for FLAC to MP3?

320 kbps gives the best quality MP3 allows. 256 or 192 kbps are excellent too when you need smaller files, because the encoder works from a lossless source.

Will the MP3s keep the album art?

Yes. The FLAC’s embedded picture becomes an ID3v2 cover image, and all the usual tags are copied.

Can it convert 24-bit/96 kHz FLAC?

Yes. The audio is resampled to 48 kHz (or 44.1 kHz for 88.2 and 176.4 kHz files), the highest rates MP3 supports.

Is it safe to convert my music collection here?

Yes. Files are read and converted inside your browser and never uploaded. Close the tab and nothing remains.

    How long does it take?

Usually a few seconds per track on a recent computer; phones are slower. A progress bar shows each file, and Cancel stops at any time.
