Public libraries have quietly shaped the lives of millions of readers. A library is far more than a room full of books; it is a place where a student without a computer can prepare for an examination, where a retired teacher can read the morning newspapers, and where a young child can discover that stories open doors to other worlds. In many towns the library is the only public space that asks nothing of its visitors except a little silence and some care for the books.

Over the last two decades, libraries have changed in ways that their founders could hardly have imagined. Catalogues that once filled wooden drawers are now searched on a screen in a few seconds. Members can renew a book from their phones, reserve a title that is out on loan, and read journals that the library subscribes to online. Yet the basic idea has not changed at all: knowledge should be shared, and no one should be turned away because they cannot pay.

Running a good library is not easy. Books wear out, budgets are limited, and buildings need regular repair. Librarians must decide every year which new titles to buy, which old ones to keep, and how to serve readers who speak different languages. They also organise reading clubs, career talks and holiday programmes for children, often with the help of volunteers from the neighbourhood.

There are simple ways in which every citizen can support this work. Return books on time, so that others do not have to wait. Handle pages gently and never mark them with a pen. Suggest titles that you think the library should own, and donate books in good condition that you no longer need. Above all, visit the library often and bring a friend along. A library that is used well is a library that will be protected, funded and improved for the next generation of readers.

SSC typing test online: practise with exam-style scoring

This free SSC typing test lets you practise the computer typing tests used in Staff Selection Commission exams in English or Hindi. Choose the CHSL LDC/JSA test (10 minutes, 35 wpm in English or 30 wpm in Hindi), the 15-minute data-entry skill test for DEO posts (8,000 key depressions per hour), the 15,000 KDPH DEO Grade A test, or a practice test of any length, then type the passage into the box below it.

When time runs out — or you submit early — your script is marked word by word the way SSC’s published evaluation guidelines describe: full mistakes for omitted, extra, repeated, misspelt or incomplete words, and half mistakes for spacing, capitalisation, punctuation and transposed words. You get net and gross speed, correct key depressions per hour (KDPH), the error percentage and every mistake highlighted with its reason.

How to use the SSC Typing Test

  1. Choose the Test: CHSL LDC/JSA English or Hindi, DEO (8,000 KDPH), DEO Grade A (15,000 KDPH) or Practice.
  2. Pick a Passage, or choose My own passage and paste any text you want to practise. Change the duration if you like.
  3. Optionally enter the permitted error % from your exam notice to get a pass/fail check on accuracy.
  4. Click in the typing box and start typing; the timer starts with your first key. Backspace is allowed; pasting is not.
  5. Press Submit test or let the timer run out, then read your speed, mistakes and the word-by-word review.

What the SSC notice says (CHSL 2025)

The Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination 2025 notice (ssc.gov.in, uploaded 23 June 2025, para 13.8.13) sets these qualifying tests: for LDC/JSA, typing in Hindi or English for 10 minutes at 35 wpm in English or 30 wpm in Hindi, which it equates to about 10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour; for DEO posts, a 15-minute data-entry test at 8,000 key depressions per hour on a passage of about 2,000–2,200 key depressions, or 15,000 per hour (about 3,700–4,000) for DEO Grade A in the C&AG department. Candidates eligible for a scribe get 5 extra minutes. The notice says errors are calculated to two decimal places under the Commission’s evaluation guidelines; the permitted error percentage is set there, so this tool asks you to enter it rather than guessing.

How your test is scored

Paragraph indentation with the Tab key, which the guidelines also mark, is not checked here. This is a practice estimate: SSC evaluates scripts with its own software, so your real result can differ.

  • Full mistake (1): an omitted word, a wrong or misspelt word, an extra word, a repeated word, or an incomplete word.
  • Half mistake (½): a missing or extra space inside the text, wrong capitalisation (English only), a missing, added or wrong punctuation mark (including the Hindi danda), or two words typed in swapped order.
  • Key depressions are the characters you typed, spaces included; SSC’s equivalence of 35 wpm to 10,500 per hour means 5 key depressions per word. Correct KDPH counts only fully correct words.
  • Gross wpm = key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes; net wpm = (key depressions ÷ 5 − mistakes) ÷ minutes, the method several recruitment boards publish. Error % = mistakes ÷ passage words reached × 100.

Hindi typing: Mangal, InScript and Kruti Dev

The Hindi test accepts Unicode Devanagari from any keyboard your computer or phone offers — Windows’ Hindi InScript or Hindi Traditional keyboard, a phonetic input tool, or a phone keyboard. Mangal is simply a Unicode font, so text typed in Mangal is ordinary Unicode and is compared correctly. This page does not simulate the Remington (Gail) or Kruti Dev typewriter layouts; to learn InScript, use the on-screen Hindi typing keyboard and the Hindi keyboard layout chart. Key depressions in Hindi are counted as Unicode characters, which matches InScript (one key per character); phonetic tools need more presses than this shows.

SSC Typing Test FAQ

Is this the official SSC typing test?

No. It is a free practice tool that follows the speeds, durations and mistake rules SSC has published. The real test runs on the Commission’s own software, and only its evaluation counts.

How many words do I need in the SSC typing test?

For CHSL LDC/JSA, 35 words per minute in English or 30 in Hindi for 10 minutes — about 1,750 or 1,500 key depressions of correct text. DEO posts need 8,000 key depressions per hour in a 15-minute test (DEO Grade A in C&AG: 15,000).

What is the difference between a full and a half mistake?

A full mistake is a word-level error: omitted, wrong, misspelt, extra, repeated or unfinished. A half mistake is a smaller slip: spacing, capitalisation, punctuation or two words in swapped order.

Can I give the Hindi typing test in Mangal font?

Yes. Mangal is a Unicode font, so type with any Unicode Hindi keyboard (InScript, phonetic or a phone keyboard). Kruti Dev and Remington layouts are not simulated here.

Is Backspace allowed?

Yes. SSC’s instructions allow candidates to revise and correct their typing within the time, so Backspace works here too. Pasting is blocked so the speed is real.

Where can I practise plain typing speed?

For short WPM drills with live error highlighting, use the typing speed test, then come back here for full exam-length passages.
