Typing speed test: find your WPM and accuracy

This free typing speed test measures how fast and how accurately you type. Choose a 30, 60 or 120-second test or a 25, 50 or 100-word sprint, pick easy, medium or hard text, and start typing — the timer begins on your first keystroke. Every character is marked correct or incorrect as you go, a caret shows where you are, and your words per minute, accuracy and error count update live.

When the test ends you get a results card with net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, corrected and uncorrected errors and a comparison with typical typing speeds, and each result is saved to a history on your device. The test is built on input events rather than key presses, so it works with on-screen keyboards on Android and iPhone as well as physical keyboards. All passages are original text written for this tool.

How to use the Typing Speed Test

  1. Choose a test length: 30, 60 or 120 seconds, or 25, 50 or 100 words.
  2. Pick a difficulty and decide whether to include punctuation and numbers.
  3. Tap or click the text box and start typing. Mistakes are highlighted in red; use Backspace to correct them.
  4. Watch the live WPM, accuracy and error counters while you type.
  5. Read your results card, then press Restart (or Tab + Enter) to try again with a fresh passage.

Typing Speed Test features

Timed and word-count modes

Six test lengths, from a quick 30-second check to a 100-word endurance run.

Three difficulty levels

Easy everyday words, medium sentences, or hard text with long words and technical vocabulary.

Punctuation and number toggles

Train on plain lowercase words or on realistic text with capitals, commas and figures.

Live, character-level feedback

Correct characters turn solid, wrong ones turn red, and the text scrolls to keep your place.

Net and raw WPM

Raw speed counts everything you typed; net WPM counts only correct characters, which is the figure employers and courses use.

How WPM and accuracy are calculated

A “word” in typing tests is standardised as five characters, including spaces and punctuation, so that long and short words count fairly. Raw WPM = characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Net WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes — uncorrected mistakes are simply not counted, so each one costs you a fifth of a word.

Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct when you pressed them: a wrong key you later fix still counts against accuracy, though not against net WPM. Typing 300 characters in 60 seconds with 285 correct keystrokes gives a raw speed of 60 WPM, a net speed of 57 WPM and 95% accuracy.

What is a good typing speed?

Many typing-based jobs and government data-entry posts in India, the UK and the US ask for 30–45 WPM with 90–95% accuracy; court reporters and transcriptionists need much more. For full-length SSC-style passages in English or Hindi, scored with full and half mistakes, use the SSC typing test.

How to type faster

  • Accuracy first. Aim for 97% or better before pushing speed; every correction costs two keystrokes and breaks your rhythm.
  • Use the home row. Rest your fingers on A S D F and J K L ; and return to them after each key. The bumps on F and J let you find them without looking.
  • Stop looking at the keyboard. Watching the screen lets you spot and fix mistakes immediately.
  • Practise little and often. Ten minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Use the history table to track your trend.
  • Fix your weak keys. Note which letters you keep missing and type words that use them. Hard mode and the numbers toggle expose weak spots quickly.
  • Check your setup. A key that sticks or double-registers will cost you; test it with the keyboard tester.

Typing Speed Test FAQ

How does the typing speed test calculate WPM?

It divides the number of correctly typed characters by five to get words, then divides by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM uses all typed characters; net WPM, the headline figure, uses only correct ones.

Does the test work on a phone?

Yes. Tap the text box to open your keyboard and type as usual. The test listens to input events, so it works with Gboard, the iPhone keyboard and swipe keyboards, although swiping whole words is slower than tapping.

Why is my net WPM lower than my raw WPM?

Because uncorrected mistakes are not counted as correct characters. If you leave errors in place, net WPM drops; if you fix them, net WPM recovers but accuracy still records the wrong keystroke.

Can I use Backspace during the test?

Yes. Correcting mistakes is part of real typing. Each corrected error still counts against accuracy, so the fastest route is to make fewer mistakes rather than to fix more.

Is 40 WPM a good typing speed?

It is about average for everyday computer users. Typing-heavy jobs usually expect 50–70 WPM, and 80 WPM or more is considered professional. With daily practice most people can add 10–20 WPM within a few weeks.

Where are my results stored?

Only in your browser’s local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded, and “Clear history” removes the saved results.
