Try the layout

Click keys above to type. Shift is off after each key.

Notes for this layout

  • Small character, top right of each key: what you get with Shift held.
  • Shift+3 to Shift+8 type frequent conjuncts in one stroke: the rakar sign, reph, ज्ञ, त्र, क्ष and श्र.
  • Press D (the halant) after a consonant for a half letter. The matra keys (ा ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ) follow the consonant.
  • Source: BIS InScript key assignments as in xkeyboard-config, symbols/in (deva).

Remington Gail is not included: no openly licensed, documented key table for it could be confirmed, and the published charts disagree with each other. Everything runs in your browser.

Hindi keyboard layout charts you can click and print

This Hindi keyboard layout chart shows where every Devanagari letter sits on a QWERTY keyboard, for the two layouts people look up most: InScript, the standard layout used with Unicode fonts such as Mangal, and Kruti Dev 010, the legacy font layout used in many offices and typing exams. Each key shows the letter it types and, in the corner, the letter you get with Shift.

Click a key to see what it types, use the letter finder to look up a conjunct such as क्ष, and press Print chart or Download PDF for a one-page landscape chart you can keep beside your keyboard.

How to use the Hindi Keyboard Layout Chart (InScript, Kruti Dev)

  1. Pick InScript (Mangal) or Kruti Dev 010 with the buttons above the keyboard.
  2. Read a key: the big character is the key alone, the small one top right is with Shift, the small Latin letter top left is the key on an English keyboard.
  3. Type a Hindi letter into Which key types this letter? and the matching keys light up.
  4. Click keys in Try the layout to practise. Use the Shift button for the shifted character.
  5. Choose A4 or US Letter and press Print chart, Download PDF or PNG.

Hindi Keyboard Layout Chart (InScript, Kruti Dev) features

Two layouts from documented data

The InScript keys are the BIS InScript assignments; the Kruti Dev 010 keys come from the same table as the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter. Nothing is typed from memory.

Reverse letter finder

Not sure where ज्ञ or ऋ lives? Type it and the key lights up, with Shift if needed.

Kruti Dev codes converted live

When you click keys on the Kruti Dev layout, the Hindi text appears in Unicode and the raw key codes are shown too.

Which layout is which?

InScript (Indian Script) is the keyboard standard published by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The same layout works for Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and other Indian scripts, with consonants on the right-hand side and vowel signs on the left. It is built into Windows, Android, macOS and Linux, and it is what you use with the Mangal font. Kruti Dev is a font from the typewriter era: the keys you press produce English letters that the font draws as Hindi, so the text only looks right with the font installed. For text that works everywhere, convert it with the Kruti Dev to Unicode converter, or type in Unicode with the Hindi typing tool.

Typing rules that trip people up

  • InScript: press the halant (the D key) after a consonant to make a half letter, then type the next consonant. Shift+3 to Shift+8 type common conjuncts in one stroke.
  • Kruti Dev: the short i sign (ि) is typed before the consonant, so कि is f then d. The reph (र्) is typed after the syllable, so कर्म is d, e, then Shift+Z.
  • Dependent signs such as ा, ि and ् are shown with a dotted circle so you can see them.

What is not here

Remington Gail is not included. It is the layout used for some government typing exams, but no openly licensed, documented key table for it could be confirmed (checked 24 October 2026), and the charts published online disagree with each other. Rather than guess, it is left out; use the table in your exam notice. The InScript source is xkeyboard-config (symbols/in); the Kruti Dev table follows the MIT-licensed @bharattype/hindi-transliteration 1.0.1.

Hindi Keyboard Layout Chart (InScript, Kruti Dev) FAQ

What is the Mangal font keyboard layout?

Mangal is a Unicode font, not a layout. With Mangal you normally type using the InScript layout (or a phonetic one). The InScript chart on this page is the layout to learn for Mangal.

Can I download the keyboard layout as a PDF?

Yes. Choose the layout and paper size, then press Download PDF. It is a single landscape page.

Is Kruti Dev the same as Mangal?

No. Kruti Dev is a legacy font with its own layout and needs the font installed. Mangal is Unicode and works anywhere.

Why does the chart show a dotted circle?

Vowel signs and the halant cannot stand alone. The circle shows where the consonant goes.

Where is the Remington Gail layout?

It is not included because a documented, openly licensed table could not be confirmed. See the section above.
