Hindi typing from English letters, as you type
This Hindi typing tool turns English letters into Hindi as you type: write aap kaise hain and get आप कैसे हैं. Type the way you text in Hinglish, or use the exact ITRANS scheme that Sanskrit and Hindi typists have used since the 1990s, and copy the Devanagari into an email, a document, a WhatsApp message or a form.
Below the text box sits a clickable Hindi keyboard in the government InScript layout, so you can also tap letters directly, add a nukta, a halant or a zero-width joiner, or switch on Use my keyboard as InScript if you already touch-type Hindi on a standard keyboard.
It is rule-based, not dictionary or AI based. That makes it fast, private and predictable, but it cannot know every spelling, which is why each word you type gets a strip of labelled alternatives. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
How to use the Hindi Typing
- Type in the left box with English letters. In Side by side the Hindi appears on the right as you type; in Type in place each word turns into Hindi when you press space.
- Keep Hinglish (easy) for everyday spellings such as kya, main, nahin, or choose ITRANS (exact) when you want every letter under your control.
- If a word comes out wrong, click the right form in the suggestion strip under the box; it replaces the word you are typing.
- Tap keys on the InScript keyboard for letters that are hard to type phonetically. Shift shows the second letter on each key.
- Press Copy Hindi or Download .txt (UTF-8 Unicode text that opens in any editor).
Hindi Typing features
Hinglish that reads like Hindi
A final a becomes ा (mera मेरा), a final i becomes ी (pani पानी), and a consonant pair before endings like -na, -ta, -ka and -se is written without a half letter (karna करना, uska उसका).
Exact ITRANS mode
Case matters as in ITRANS 5.2: T ट, Sh ष, A आ, RRi ऋ, M ं, .N ँ, H ः, .h halant, .a ऽ, OM ॐ.
Suggestion strip
Alternatives for the current word: common spellings, a nasal ending (मैं, हूँ), ज्ञ for gy, the flapped ड़, dental or retroflex letters, long vowels and half-letter choices, each labelled.
InScript on-screen keyboard
All four rows of the standard layout plus nukta letters, ॐ, danda, avagraha, ₹ and ZWJ/ZWNJ keys; your physical keyboard can type InScript too.
Counts and export
Words, characters and syllables update live, and the result copies or downloads as plain Unicode text.
How English letters become Hindi
Every letter group maps to one Devanagari letter: k क, kh ख, ch च, chh छ, sh श. A consonant followed by a vowel takes the vowel sign (ki कि, kee की); a consonant followed by another consonant joins it with a halant, which is how conjuncts such as क्या, प्रेम and नमस्ते form. Shortcuts cover the special conjuncts: x or ksh gives क्ष and GY gives ज्ञ, while त्र and श्र come out naturally from tr and shr.
Hinglish spelling leaves out the silent a that Hindi does not pronounce, so the Hinglish style adds a few guesses on top: n or m before a consonant of the same group becomes ं (हिंदी), and a short table of about 75 very common words fixes spellings the rules cannot reach (मैं, हैं, नहीं, क्यों, तुम्हें). Each guess can be switched off, and nothing is guessed in ITRANS mode.
Quick reference
| You type | Hindi | Why |
|---|---|---|
| aap kaise hain | आप कैसे हैं | aa = आ, ai = ै, common-word table for hain |
| kya | क्या | k + y joins, final a = ा |
| karna, sakta, uska | करना, सकता, उसका | silent a kept before -na, -ta, -ka |
| zindagi, qila, laRaka | ज़िंदगी, क़िला, लड़का | z, q, R are nukta letters |
| duHkh, maa.N | दुःख, माँ | H = visarga, .N = chandrabindu |
| ##Hello## | Hello | English between ## is kept |
Limits worth knowing
- Hinglish spellings are ambiguous: char could be चर or चार, ki could be की or कि. The tool picks one rule-based form and offers the others as suggestions; it does not read the sentence.
- A word written with only its first letter in capitals (Delhi, Main) is treated as lower case in Hinglish style. For ट, ड, ण or ष at the start of a word, use ITRANS style or the suggestion strip.
- The text is standard Unicode. Old font-based files such as Kruti Dev need a converter, not this keyboard.
- To romanise Hindi you already have, use the Devanagari transliterator; to change the language rather than the script, use the translation tool; to check length afterwards, the word counter.
Hindi Typing FAQ
How do I type in Hindi using an English keyboard?
Type the Hindi words the way they sound in English letters, for example mera naam, and the tool writes मेरा नाम. Use the suggestion strip when a word has more than one possible spelling.
Is this English to Hindi typing or translation?
Typing. It changes the script, not the language: thank you is spelled out in Hindi letters; it does not become धन्यवाद. For meaning, use a translator.
How do I type ं, ँ and the halant?
In Hinglish, n or m before a consonant becomes ं automatically, and M or .n adds one anywhere. Type .N or ~ for ँ, .h for a visible halant, or tap the keys on the keyboard.
How do I type क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र?
Type ksh or x for क्ष, tr for त्र, GY for ज्ञ (or pick ज्ञ in the suggestions after gy), and shr for श्र. On the InScript keyboard they are Shift + 7, 6, 5 and 8.
Does it work offline and keep my text private?
Yes. The rules run in your browser after the page loads; nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored.
What is the InScript keyboard?
InScript is the standard Indian keyboard layout for Devanagari defined by the Bureau of Indian Standards (last revised in 1992) and built into Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. Vowel signs sit under the left hand and consonants under the right.
