A question paper maker with sections, marks totals and an answer key

This question paper maker helps teachers, tutors and coaching centres set a clean, printable test paper in minutes. Type a school header, the examination name, class, subject and time allowed; write general instructions; then add sections and questions of six types — multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blanks, short answer, long answer and match the following. Marks are added up as you type, so the maximum marks on the paper always match the questions.

When the paper is ready, print it or download a vector PDF on A4 or US Letter. The answer key is laid out on its own page, after the paper, so you can print it separately. Everything happens in your browser: the paper is saved on this device as you work, and you can export it as a file to reuse next term. Nothing is uploaded and there is no sign-up.

How to use the Question Paper Maker

  1. Fill in the header: school, examination, subject, class, time allowed and, if you want a blueprint check, the Maximum marks.
  2. Write the general instructions, one per line — they are numbered automatically.
  3. In each section, press a button under Add to add a question, choose its type, type the question and set its marks. For multiple choice, tick the correct option; for fill in the blanks, type ___ where the blank goes.
  4. Use Add section for Section B, C and so on, and the arrows to reorder questions or sections.
  5. Choose paper size, numbering, how marks are shown and the paper set, then press Print question paper or Download PDF. Use the page buttons to check every page, including the answer key.

Question Paper Maker features

Six question types

MCQ with four options, true/false, fill in the blanks, short and long answers with optional answer lines, and match the following with Column B shuffled.

Automatic totals and blueprint check

Section and paper totals update as you type, with a count of marks by question type; set the maximum marks or a section target to see if the paper adds up.

Internal choice

Add an OR question to any short or long answer, printed under the main question as board papers do.

Answer key page

Correct options, true/false, blanks, model answers and match pairs are printed on a separate page.

Sets B, C and D

Make shuffled versions of the same paper — question order within sections and MCQ options change, and the answer key follows.

Print, PDF and PNG

A vector PDF in A4, Letter, A5 or Legal, a PNG of any first page, or direct printing at 100% scale.

Question paper format: a common layout

Most school question paper formats — CBSE and state boards in India, and many US and UK school tests — follow the same order, which this tool prints for you:

  1. Header: school name, examination, class, subject, time allowed and maximum marks.
  2. Lines for the student’s name, roll number and section.
  3. Numbered general instructions, such as “All questions are compulsory” and where internal choices are.
  4. Sections from easiest to longest: objective questions (MCQ, true/false, fill in the blanks), then short answers, then long answers or case-based questions.
  5. Each question numbered, with its marks at the right margin, and a short note under each section heading such as “This section has 7 questions of 1 mark each”.

Setting a balanced paper (blueprint)

A blueprint is the plan of marks by topic and by question type before you write the questions. Decide the total first — for example 80 marks for a board-style paper or 25 for a unit test — then share it between objective, short and long questions. Enter that total as the maximum marks and give each section a target; the summary shows the marks by question type and tells you when a section or the whole paper is over or under.

Board patterns change from year to year, so check your board’s current sample paper for the exact number of questions and marks per section. This tool does not ship any board’s papers; it gives you the layout and the arithmetic.

Tips and limits

  • To turn a whole passage into blanks, use the fill in the blanks generator.
  • Use Set B or C for students sitting side by side, and an OMR sheet if they mark MCQ answers on a bubble sheet.
  • Text is set in standard PDF fonts, which cover English and Western European letters. Hindi, Tamil and other scripts show in the editor but are replaced by “?” in the PDF, so this tool suits papers written in English.
  • Images and diagrams cannot be placed inside questions; leave answer lines and draw on the printout.
  • After the test, the marks percentage calculator turns scores into percentages.

Question Paper Maker FAQ

Is this question paper maker online free?

Yes. It is free with no account, no watermark and no limit on papers. It runs entirely in your browser.

Can I make a question paper with an answer key?

Yes. Tick the correct MCQ options, choose true or false, and type answers or model answers; with “Answer key on a separate page” switched on, the key follows the paper on its own page.

How are total marks calculated?

Each question has its own marks. The tool adds them per section and for the whole paper as you type, and prints the total as the maximum marks unless you enter your own figure, in which case it tells you the difference.

Can I follow the CBSE question paper format?

Yes. Set up sections A to E with the question types and marks of your board’s current sample paper, add internal choices with the OR field and enter the maximum marks to check the blueprint.

Can I save a question paper and edit it later?

Your paper is kept in this browser automatically. Press “Save paper (.json)” to keep a file, and “Open saved paper” to load it on another computer.

Can I make different sets of the same paper?

Yes. Choose Set B, C or D: questions are shuffled within each section and MCQ options are reordered, and the answer key matches that set.

Are my questions uploaded anywhere?

No. The paper, preview and PDF are all made on your device.
