Final grade calculator: the score you need on your final exam

Exams are close and you want to know one number: what do I need on my final? This final grade calculator answers it from three things you already know — your current grade, how much the final exam is worth, and the course grade you are aiming for.

It shows the exact score required, flags targets that are mathematically out of reach, tells you when a grade is already guaranteed, and lists the score you need for every letter grade at once — US plus/minus, simple A–F or UK degree classes. Add a “what if” score to see where a particular result would leave you.

How to use the Final Grade Calculator

  1. Enter your current grade in the course as a percentage (your teacher’s gradebook or the grade calculator will tell you).
  2. Enter the weight of the final exam — for example 25% if the syllabus says the final counts for a quarter of the grade.
  3. Type the course grade you want. The score you need appears immediately, with the formula.
  4. Check the table for the score needed for every letter grade, and pick the scale your school uses.
  5. Optionally type a score in “What if I score…” to see the course grade it would give you.

Final Grade Calculator features

Instant answer

The required final exam score updates as you type, with the worked formula underneath.

Impossible targets flagged

If you would need more than 100%, you see “Not possible” and the best grade you can still reach.

Every letter grade at once

A table lists the score you need for A, B, C, D (or First, 2:1, 2:2, Third) so you can plan realistically.

What-if mode

Enter a predicted exam score to see the course grade it produces.

The final exam formula

Your course grade is a weighted average of the work done so far and the final exam: course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w, where w is the exam weight as a decimal. Rearranging gives the score you need: final needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w.

Example: you have 84% and the final is worth 25%. To finish with 85%: (85 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (85 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 88%. To finish with 95% you would need 128% — not possible. A 90% on the exam would give 84 × 0.75 + 90 × 0.25 = 85.5%.

The heavier the final, the more it can move your grade. With a 50% final, every point on the exam moves your course grade by half a point; with a 10% final, by only a tenth.

Things to check before you trust the number

  • Use your current grade as calculated without the final — not a grade that already includes a zero for it.
  • Some courses require a minimum mark on the final itself to pass, whatever your average. Check the syllabus or module handbook.
  • Curves, scaling and rounding (for example 89.5% rounding up to an A−) are decided by your teacher or examiner and are not included.
  • If the final replaces your lowest test score, or other work is still to be graded, use the grade calculator, which handles several remaining items.
  • Once you have your course grades, the GPA calculator shows how they affect your GPA.

Final Grade Calculator FAQ

What do I need on my final to get an A?

Use the formula (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w with your school’s cut-off for an A (93% on the plus/minus scale, 90% on a simple scale). The table in the final grade calculator shows the answer for every letter grade.

How is the final exam weight used?

The weight is the share of the course grade that comes from the final. If the final is worth 30%, the work you have already done is worth the other 70%, so your course grade is current × 0.7 + final × 0.3.

What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?

Then that target cannot be reached through the final alone. The calculator shows the highest grade still possible. Ask your teacher about extra credit, retakes or dropped scores if your syllabus allows them.

Can I fail the course if I do badly on the final?

Look at the “Guaranteed” rows in the table: those grades are safe even with a 0% on the final. Otherwise use “What if I score…” to see the result of a low score — and remember some courses require a minimum mark on the exam itself.

Does this work for UK university modules?

Yes. Choose the UK scale to see the exam mark needed for a First (70%), 2:1 (60%), 2:2 (50%) or Third (40%) in the module, using the exam’s weighting from your module handbook.
