A grade calculator for weighted and points-based classes

This grade calculator works out your current grade in a course from your assignments, quizzes, labs and exams — whether your teacher uses weighted categories (homework 20%, midterm 25%, final 40% …) or a simple total-points system. It shows your grade as a percentage and a letter, how much of the course has been graded, and the lowest and highest grade you can still finish with.

Set a target and it tells you the average you need on everything that is left, flagging targets that are no longer possible. It is built for students in the US, UK and India alike, with US plus/minus, simple A–F and UK degree-class letter scales. Your rows are saved in your browser, so you can update them after every test.

How to use the Grade Calculator

  1. Choose the grading method from your syllabus: weighted categories or total points.
  2. Add a row for each assignment or category. Enter its weight (for weighted classes), your score and what it was out of — leave “out of” blank if your score is already a percentage.
  3. Leave the score empty for anything not yet graded, such as the final exam; it is counted as remaining work.
  4. Read your current grade and letter, then check the weight graded and the best and worst possible outcomes.
  5. Type your target grade to see the average you need on the remaining work.

Grade Calculator features

Weights or points

Switch between weighted categories and total points; the calculator uses the right formula for each.

Scores in any form

Enter 42 out of 50, 182 out of 200 or a plain percentage — every score is converted to a percentage first.

Weight check

You are warned when weights add up to more than 100%, and any shortfall is treated as ungraded work.

What you need

The average required on remaining work, with a clear “not possible” message above 100%.

Best and worst case

See the grade you would finish with if you scored 0% or 100% on everything left.

Three letter scales

US plus/minus (A 93+), US simple (90/80/70/60) and UK university classes (First 70+, 2:1 60+, 2:2 50+, Third 40+).

How a weighted grade is calculated

Convert each score to a percentage, multiply it by its category weight, add the results and divide by the total weight of the work graded so far: current grade = Σ(score % × weight) ÷ Σ weight graded.

Worked example (the example the tool loads): homework 182/200 = 91% at 20%, quizzes 80% at 15%, midterm 42/50 = 84% at 25%. That is 20 × 91 + 15 × 80 + 25 × 84 = 5,120, divided by 60 = 85.33%, a B on the plus/minus scale. With the 40% final still to come, finishing on 90% needs (90 × 100 − 5,120) ÷ 40 = 97% on the final; finishing on 80% needs 72%.

In a points-based class every point counts equally, so the grade is simply points earned ÷ points possible. The same scores give 304 ÷ 350 = 86.86%, because the 200-point homework category carries more weight than in the weighted version.

Letter grade scales

Cut-offs are set by each teacher or institution, so check your syllabus. The scales built into the calculator are:

ScaleCut-offs
US plus/minusA+ 97 · A 93 · A− 90 · B+ 87 · B 83 · B− 80 · C+ 77 · C 73 · C− 70 · D+ 67 · D 63 · D− 60 · F below 60
US simpleA 90 · B 80 · C 70 · D 60 · F below 60
UK universityFirst 70 · Upper second (2:1) 60 · Lower second (2:2) 50 · Third 40 · Fail below 40

Tips for using your grade breakdown

  • Copy the weights straight from the syllabus. If they don’t add up to 100%, a category may be missing — such as participation or a project.
  • Some teachers drop the lowest quiz or homework score. Leave that score out to match how your teacher calculates the grade.
  • Extra credit can push a category above 100%. Enter it as part of the score (for example 105 out of 100).
  • Planning for the final exam only? The final grade calculator needs just your current grade and the exam weight. To combine course grades into a GPA, use the GPA calculator; teachers curving a whole class list can use the curve grades calculator.

Grade Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate my grade?

Turn each score into a percentage, multiply by its weight, add them up and divide by the total weight graded so far. In a points-based class, divide the points you have earned by the points possible. The grade calculator does both and updates as you type.

What if my category weights don’t add up to 100%?

If they add up to less, the calculator treats the missing weight as work still to be graded. If they add up to more than 100%, it warns you, because one of the weights is probably mistyped.

How do I find out what I need on the rest of my assignments?

Enter your target grade. The calculator works out (target × total weight − points already banked) ÷ remaining weight and shows the average you need on everything that has not been graded yet.

What does “not possible” mean?

It means even 100% on all remaining work would leave you below your target. The calculator shows the highest grade you can still reach so you can set a realistic goal or ask about extra credit.

Is a weighted grade different from a points-based grade?

Yes, often by several percent. In a weighted class each category has a fixed share of the final grade regardless of how many points it contains; in a points-based class large assignments count for more. Switch the method to see both.

Does the grade calculator save my data?

Your rows are stored only in your browser’s local storage so they are there next time. Nothing is uploaded, and “Clear rows” removes them.
