A percentage to grade calculator with printable grading charts

This percentage to grade calculator converts a test score or percentage into a letter grade, grade points or class. Enter your score and the total, choose a grading scale — US plus/minus, US A–F, UK degree classes, Australian HD to F, CBSE’s A1 to E, or your own — and you see the grade, the percentage range it covers and how many more marks the next grade needs.

Teachers can use it as a grading scale calculator: set the test total and it builds a chart of every possible score with its percentage and grade, ready to print or save as PDF next to the grading scale table. Scales are fully editable, so a school policy such as “A from 94%” takes seconds to set up.

How to use the Percentage to Grade Calculator

  1. Type the score and the total (keep “Out of” at 100 to enter a percentage directly).
  2. Pick a grading scale, or open “Edit the grading scale” to change the cut-offs and grade points.
  3. Tick the rounding box if your school rounds percentages before grading.
  4. For a printable grade chart, set the test total, choose whole, half or quarter points, pick the paper size and press Print chart, Download PDF or PNG.
  5. For an easy grader, read the table under the chart settings: find the number of points wrong in the first column to see the percentage and grade.

Percentage to grade in the UK, Australia and India

UK universities classify honours degrees as First (70% and above), Upper second or 2:1 (60–69%), Lower second or 2:2 (50–59%) and Third (40–49%). GCSE and A level grades are different: their boundaries are set in raw marks for each exam paper every year, so no fixed percentage gives a grade 7 or an A.

Many Australian universities use High Distinction 85–100, Distinction 75–84, Credit 65–74, Pass 50–64 and Fail below 50; some use other bands, so check your handbook.

CBSE grades school-based assessment on an 8-point scale (Circular Acad-14/2017): A1 91–100, A2 81–90, B1 71–80, B2 61–70, C1 51–60, C2 41–50, D 33–40 and E for 32 and below. Class 10 and 12 board exams are different: board grades are positional, given to equal shares of the students who pass, so a percentage cannot be turned into a board grade.

How the grade is worked out

Percentage = score ÷ total × 100; the grade is the highest one whose minimum the percentage reaches. 41 out of 48 is 85.42%, a B on the plus/minus scale; 3 more marks would reach 91.67%, an A−. If your school rounds first, 89.5% becomes 90% and an A−. To turn a whole year of grades into a GPA, use the GPA calculator; for weighted course grades, the grade calculator.
