A fill in the blanks generator for cloze worksheets with answers
This fill in the blanks generator turns any passage into a printable cloze worksheet with answers. Paste a paragraph from your lesson, choose which words disappear — every seventh word, all the articles, the prepositions, a list of key terms, or words you click — and the tool numbers the blanks, builds a word bank and writes the answer key on a separate page.
Teachers use it for reading comprehension, vocabulary revision and grammar practice such as fill in the blanks with articles (a, an, the) or prepositions. Students can also practise on screen and check their answers. It is rule-based: no AI service reads your text, and nothing leaves your browser.
How to use the Fill in the Blanks Generator
- Paste your passage into the Passage box (or keep the example).
- Choose Every nth word, Kinds of words, Chosen words or Click words, and adjust the settings.

Fill in the Blanks Generator features
Classic cloze
Blank every nth word (2–50), starting where you like, keeping the first sentence whole so readers get the context.
Grammar worksheets
Blank articles, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions or helping verbs from fixed word lists, plus ending-based rules for -ing/-ed, -ly, adjective and noun endings.
Word bank or hints
An A–Z or shuffled word bank with optional extra distractor words, or the first letter of each missing word.
Rule-based multiple choice
Three or four options per blank, drawn from words of the same kind or from the passage — a simple MCQ generator from text, with answers.
Answer key and PDF
Numbered blanks, a key on its own page, and vector PDF, PNG or print on A4, Letter, A5 or Legal.
Practise on screen
Type answers or choose options in the browser and check them at once.
How the blanks are chosen
- Every nth word counts the words that qualify — outside the first sentence if you keep it whole, and at least the minimum length — and blanks word number start, start + n and so on. A 7th-word deletion is the traditional cloze procedure for reading tests; every 5th word makes a harder test, every 10th an easier one.
- Kinds of words uses fixed English word lists for articles, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions and helping verbs. The lists ignore context, so “to” is treated as a preposition and “that” as a conjunction. The ending rules (-ing, -ed, -ly, -ful, -tion …) are heuristics and will catch some wrong words; this is not a real part-of-speech tagger.
- Chosen words blanks every occurrence of the words you type (or only the first one), ignoring capital letters.
- Most blanks keeps the worksheet manageable: if more words match, the tool picks evenly spaced ones through the passage.
Choosing an answer format
Accept sensible alternatives when marking a write-in cloze: the answer key gives the original word, but another word that fits the meaning and grammar usually shows the same understanding. For full test papers with sections and marks, use the question paper maker; for memorising terms, the flashcard maker.
| Format | Best for | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | Younger learners, grammar drills, quick marking | Easiest |
| Word bank | Vocabulary from a topic, mixed-ability classes | Easy to medium |
| First-letter hints | Spelling and recall of key terms | Medium |
| Write-in blanks | Reading comprehension and real cloze tests | Hardest |
Limits
Multiple-choice distractors come from fixed lists and from your passage, not from a language model, so a distractor can occasionally fit the blank as well — read them before printing. The PDF uses standard fonts that cover English and Western European letters; other scripts are replaced by “?” in the PDF.
Fill in the Blanks Generator FAQ
How do I make a fill in the blanks worksheet with answers?
Paste your text, choose which words to blank, and print. The answer key with every missing word is printed on a separate page, so you can keep it for marking.
Can it make fill in the blanks with articles?
Yes. Choose Kinds of words, tick Articles (a, an, the) and every article in the passage becomes a blank. Multiple choice then offers a, an and the as the options.
Is this an MCQ generator from text?
For gap-fill questions, yes: choose a multiple-choice format and each blank gets three or four options with the correct answer marked in the key. It does not write new questions about the text; that needs AI, which this tool does not use.
What is a cloze test?
A cloze test is a passage with words removed — classically every 5th to 10th word — that readers fill in from context. It measures reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Can I choose exactly which words are blanked?
Yes. Type them under Chosen words, or click words in the preview in any mode; click again to restore a word.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser; your passage and settings are stored only on this device.
