Estimate an Indian train fare from the distance
This train fare calculator by distance estimates the ticket price for an Indian Railways mail or express train. Enter the distance in kilometres and choose the class; the calculator looks up the basic fare in the official passenger fare table, adds the reservation fee, the superfast charge and GST where they apply, and rounds the total the way railway fares are rounded.
It is built for the questions people actually ask — “what is the railway fare chart per km?”, “how much is sleeper class for 500 km?”, “how much more is 3AC than sleeper?” — and it shows every class side by side for the same distance, so you can compare before you book.
How to use the Train Fare Calculator by Distance
- Enter the distance between your two stations (the timetable or train schedule shows it).
- Choose the class, and the number of passengers.
- Tick or untick Superfast train to match the train you will take.
- For AC 2-tier or AC first class, choose the season; for second class, say whether the seat is reserved.
- Read the estimate per passenger and the breakdown, and compare all classes in the table below.

Where the numbers come from
The basic fares are the Mail/Express tables attached to Railway Board Commercial Circular No. 24 of 2025, dated 25 December 2025, which raised mail/express and AC fares by 2 paise per kilometre from 26 December 2025. I read them from the copy Central Railway published as Advance Rates Notification No. 16 of 2025 and checked every figure against the previous table of 1 July 2025 plus that increase. No later revision appears in the 2026 notifications checked on 24 October 2026.
The circular says the reservation fee and superfast charge did not change, that GST continues to be levied as applicable, and that rounding continues on existing principles: the fare, after adding these charges, is rounded up to the next multiple of ₹5. GST on first class and AC travel is 5%; sleeper and second class carry none.
| Class | Minimum km | Reservation fee | Superfast charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second class (2S) | 50 | ₹15 | ₹15 |
| Sleeper (SL) | 200 | ₹20 | ₹30 |
| AC chair car (CC) | 150 | ₹40 | ₹45 |
| AC 3-tier / 3-tier economy | 300 | ₹40 | ₹45 |
| First class (FC) | 100 | ₹50 | ₹45 |
| AC 2-tier (2A) | 300 | ₹50 | ₹45 |
| AC first class (1A) | 300 | ₹60 | ₹75 |
Worked example and the fare per km
For 1,000 km in AC 3-tier on a superfast train: basic fare ₹1,236 + reservation ₹40 + superfast ₹45 = ₹1,321; GST at 5% is ₹66.05, making ₹1,387.05, which rounds up to ₹1,390. The same trip in sleeper is ₹489 + ₹20 + ₹30 = ₹539, rounded to ₹540.
The fare per km is not a single rate: the table falls per kilometre as the distance grows, so a 1,000 km sleeper ticket works out to about 49 paise a km in basic fare while 200 km costs 65 paise a km. That is why this calculator uses the full table rather than a flat rate.
Limits of the estimate
Premium trains — Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Garib Rath, Antyodaya and others — have their own fares, often with catering or dynamic pricing, so they are not modelled. Concessions, Tatkal and Premium Tatkal charges, catering, convenience fees and payment charges are also excluded. The peak-season fares for AC 2-tier and AC first class also apply to popular trains all year, according to the fare table.
For Tatkal, add the charge from the Tatkal charges calculator; check when booking opens with the booking date calculator, and see refunds with the cancellation charges calculator.
Train Fare Calculator by Distance FAQ
How does the train fare calculator by distance work?
It finds the distance slab in the official fare table for your class, applies the class minimum distance, adds the reservation fee, superfast charge and GST, and rounds up to the next ₹5.
What is the latest Indian Railway fare chart per km?
The current table took effect on 26 December 2025, adding 2 paise per km to mail/express and AC fares. The per-km rate falls with distance, so the calculator uses the full slab table.
Why is my IRCTC fare different?
Your train may be a premium train with its own fare, or include catering, dynamic pricing, Tatkal or convenience fees. This tool estimates the standard mail/express fare only.
Is GST charged on sleeper class?
No. GST of 5% applies to first class and AC classes only.
What is the minimum distance for sleeper class?
Sleeper tickets are charged for at least 200 km, AC chair car for 150 km and AC 3-tier, 2-tier and first class for 300 km.
What is the superfast charge?
A supplementary charge for superfast trains: ₹15 in second class, ₹30 in sleeper, ₹45 in chair car, 3-tier, first class and 2-tier, and ₹75 in AC first class.
