Check your passport validity for international travel
Many countries will not let you in — and airlines will not let you board — unless your passport stays valid for some time after your trip. The rules differ: the Schengen area wants 3 months beyond the day you leave and a passport issued within the last 10 years, the UAE, Thailand and Singapore want 6 months, the UK only wants it valid for your stay. This passport validity checker applies the rule for your destination to your actual passport and trip dates and tells you, to the day, whether you pass.
Each rule comes from the destination government’s own website, linked next to the result with the date it was last checked. One table also runs your passport through every rule in the tool at once — handy when you are planning several trips or deciding whether to renew now.
How to use the Passport Validity Checker
- Pick your Destination. For the United States, also choose the country that issued your passport; for Türkiye, the length of stay your visa or exemption allows.
- Enter your passport’s issue and expiry dates, and the number of blank pages left if you know it.
- Enter your arrival and departure dates.
- Read the verdict, the date your passport must be valid until, and each check (validity, 10-year rule, blank pages).
- Look at the table to see how the same passport fares for every other destination, and follow the source link to confirm before you book.
Passport Validity Checker features
Official sources only
Every rule links to the government page it was read from, with the date it was checked.
Day-exact maths
Calendar months are added properly (31 January + 1 month = 28 or 29 February) and the deadline is shown as a date.
Schengen 10-year rule
Checks both the 3-month margin and that the passport was issued within the previous 10 years on the day you enter.
US Six-Month Club
Uses CBP’s December 2025 list to decide between “valid for the stay” and “6 months beyond the stay”.
Custom rule
Choose Other to enter any months-or-days rule, blank pages and the 10-year condition yourself.
Passport validity rules in this tool
Rules as read on 24 October 2026. Some, like the UAE and Thailand, say little about whether airlines count from arrival or departure; when a page is unclear, the stricter reading is used and the source is quoted.

|---|---|---|
| Schengen area | 3 months, and issued within 10 years | Departure / entry |
| United Kingdom, Canada | Whole stay | Departure |
| United States | Whole stay (Six-Month Club) or 6 months | Departure |

Why passports “expire early” for travel
A passport that is still valid at home can be useless abroad. Six-month rules exist so that a traveller who is delayed, falls ill or overstays still holds a valid document while they are in the country. Airlines check these rules at check-in because they must fly refused passengers home at their own cost, which is why you can be stopped before you even leave.
The Schengen 10-year rule surprises people whose passports were issued with extra months carried over from an old one: if it was issued more than 10 years before you enter, it fails even though the expiry date is in the future. Indian passports for adults are valid for 10 years, so an Indian traveller usually hits the 3-month margin first. To plan your days inside the Schengen area, use the Schengen 90/180 Calculator; to budget a renewal in India, the Passport Fee Calculator.
Before you rely on the result
- Check the destination’s official immigration or embassy site — rules change and some apply only to certain nationalities or visa types.
- Count transit countries too: a connection through a country with a stricter rule can matter if you pass through immigration.
- Visa validity is separate. A visa in a passport that is about to expire may also be limited.
- If the result is close, renew. Most authorities will issue a new passport months before the old one runs out.
Passport Validity Checker FAQ
What is the passport validity required for international travel?
It depends on the destination. Common rules are “valid for the whole stay” (UK, Canada), “3 months after you leave” (Schengen, New Zealand) and “6 months from arrival” (UAE, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia). This checker applies the official rule for your destination to your dates.
What passport validity do I need for a Schengen visa or trip to Europe?
At least 3 months beyond the day you plan to leave the Schengen area, and the passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years on the day you enter. Ireland is separate and, for visa applicants, asks for 6 months after you leave.
What passport validity is needed for Thailand?
At least 6 months on the day you arrive, according to the Royal Thai Embassy. If your passport expires within 6 months of arrival, renew it before you travel.
Do I need 6 months on my passport to visit the USA?
Only if your passport country is not on CBP’s exemption list. Citizens of the listed countries — including India, the UK, Canada, Australia and most of Europe — need a passport valid for the length of their stay.
Does the passport validity check count my departure day?
The deadline is a calendar date: for “3 months after departure” leaving on 5 January means valid until at least 5 April. The tool shows how many days you have to spare or are short.
Is this passport validity checker official?
No. It applies rules read from official government pages, linked with the date they were checked, but it is general information, not legal advice. Always confirm on the destination’s official website before you travel.
