What time should I leave for the airport?
This when to leave for the airport calculator works backwards from your departure time. It finds the latest moment you can reach the terminal and still drop your bag before the counter closes and clear security before the boarding gate shuts, adds your own buffer, compares that with the common “arrive two hours early for domestic, three for international” advice, and then subtracts the drive, a traffic allowance and the time to park or get dropped off. The answer is a single “leave at” time and a timeline you can copy into a chat.
Every number is yours to change. Flights, airports and seasons differ: a 7 am domestic flight with cabin baggage only needs far less time than an evening international departure with two checked bags in holiday season. Switch between domestic and international to load sensible defaults, then adjust them to what your ticket says.
How to use the When to Leave for the Airport Calculator
- Choose domestic or international and enter the departure date and time as printed on your ticket.
- Tick or untick Checking in a bag, and check the bag drop and gate closing times on your booking.
- Adjust security, queue and walking times if you know the airport, and enter your travel time to the airport at that hour.
- Pick how to plan: the earlier of the typical advice and your own buffers (safest), or either one alone.
- Read the leave-at time and the timeline, and press Copy the plan.
When to Leave for the Airport Calculator features
Two deadlines checked
Bag drop closing and boarding gate closing are both worked back, and whichever bites first sets the latest arrival.
Typical advice side by side
Compares your own buffers with the usual 2 h / 3 h advice and uses the earlier time by default.
Traffic allowance
Adds a percentage to the drive time, plus time to park or reach the terminal from the drop-off.
Overnight flights
An early-morning departure correctly gives a leave time on the evening before.
Latest possible time
Shows when leaving would leave no slack at all, so you know how much margin your plan really has.
How the calculation works
With a checked bag you must be at the bag drop, through the queue, before it closes: latest arrival = departure − bag drop closing time − queue. You must also clear security (and immigration on international flights) and walk to the gate before the gate closes: latest arrival = departure − gate closing − walk − security − queue. The earlier of the two is the true deadline. Your extra buffer is taken off that, the result is compared with the typical advice, and the earlier time becomes your arrival target. The leave time is the arrival target minus drive time × (1 + traffic %) minus parking or drop-off, rounded down to the nearest five minutes.
Example: a 09:30 domestic flight with a bag, bag drop closing 45 minutes before and the gate 25 minutes before, 30 minutes for security, a 20-minute queue and a 10-minute walk. The gate deadline gives a latest arrival of 08:05; with a 15-minute buffer that is 07:50, but the two-hour advice says 07:30, so the plan uses 07:30. A 45-minute drive plus 25% for traffic and 10 minutes to park is 66 minutes, so you leave at 06:20.
Typical times to plan with
These are typical planning ranges, not rules: airlines set their own closing times and print them on the ticket or boarding pass, and queues vary by airport, time of day and season. Use the layover calculator for connections, the flight time calculator for the flight itself and the power bank checker before you pack your cabin bag.
| Setting | Domestic | International |

| Boarding gate closes | 20–25 min before | 20–30 min before |
| Security (and immigration) | 20–45 min | 45–90 min |
When to Leave for the Airport Calculator FAQ
How early should I get to the airport for a domestic flight?
The common advice is two hours before departure, and at least an hour before if you only have cabin baggage and have checked in online. The calculator compares that advice with the actual bag drop and gate deadlines on your ticket.
How early should I arrive for an international flight?
Usually three hours, because of bag drop, security and emigration or passport control. Switch to International to load those defaults.
What time should I leave for the airport with no checked bag?
Untick Checking in a bag. The calculator then only needs you to clear security and reach the gate before it closes, which often lets you leave 20–30 minutes later.
Does the calculator include traffic?
Yes. Enter the normal drive time and a traffic allowance as a percentage; 25% is a reasonable default for a city at rush hour.
Which time zone should I use?
Local time at the departure airport, exactly as printed on your ticket. The leave time is in the same local time.
Is it safe to leave at the “latest possible” time?
No. That time has no slack at all — any queue, delay or traffic jam means missing the bag drop or the gate. Plan with the leave-at time instead.
