Study Abroad Cost Calculator — Tuition, Living, Visa and Flights

Add tuition, living, visa, insurance and flights for each year abroad; see the total and a rupee view.

Three letters, such as USD or EUR

Pre-filled with the UK Student visa figures from GOV.UK, read 24 October 2026: visa fee £558, health surcharge £776 a year, maintenance funds £1,171 a month for up to 9 months (£1,529 in London). That living figure is the minimum the visa asks you to show, not a forecast of what you will spend. Tuition is not pre-filled.

An estimate from the figures you type, not a quote and not financial or immigration advice. Always confirm fees and funds on the official government and university pages before you apply.

Runs entirely in your browser. The only network request is the optional “Get today’s rate” button, which asks open.er-api.com for an exchange rate (it sends only the currency code).

A study abroad cost calculator you can fill with your own numbers

This study abroad cost calculator adds up what a degree overseas really costs: tuition, living costs, health insurance, flights, books, the visa and one-off expenses such as test fees and deposits. Pick the destination, set the course length and type your figures; the page shows the total, the first year, the average per year and a line-by-line table. Add an exchange rate and you also see the total in rupees, which is how most families in India weigh the cost of studying abroad.

Every number is yours to change. The page pre-fills only the UK Student visa figures, because they are published on GOV.UK and were checked on 24 October 2026. For the US, Canada, Germany, Australia and Ireland the official amounts change often, so those presets start empty and point to the government page to copy from, and tuition is never guessed.

How to use the Study Abroad Cost Calculator

  1. Choose the destination and the course length in years. The currency code follows the country; edit it for any other currency.
  2. Enter tuition per year from the university’s fee page, and the living cost per month and number of months you will be there.
  3. Add health insurance or surcharge, flights, books and other yearly costs, then the visa and one-off costs.
  4. Optionally set a yearly cost increase for tuition and living, and type a rupee rate or press “Get today’s rate”.
  5. Read the total, first-year figure and table, then press Copy summary to share it.

These come from GOV.UK pages read on 24 October 2026. Check them again before you apply, because the Home Office changes them.

Proof of funds is not the same as your budget

Visa authorities set a minimum you must show in the bank. It is a pass mark for the application, not a forecast of your spending, and in many countries it is counted on top of tuition. A city with high rent can cost far more than the visa minimum, and a shared flat in a cheaper town can cost less. Use the visa figure as a floor and replace it with quotes for rent, food and transport from the university’s accommodation or student pages.

Tuition for the same degree varies enormously between universities and even between courses in one university, which is why this tool never pre-fills it. Public universities in some countries charge little or no tuition but still need living costs and insurance; check the fee page for your exact programme and fee status.

Worked example

Three years in the UK with £20,000 tuition and one £700 flight a year: each year is £20,000 + 9 × £1,171 + £776 + £700 = £32,015, so three years come to £96,045, plus the £558 visa, £96,603 in all. At ₹110 to the pound that is about ₹1.06 crore. Add exam fees or a deposit under one-off costs, and set a yearly increase if the university raises fees. To see how the exam side of the plan fits in, try the GMAT score calculator or the GRE score percentile finder.

Study Abroad Cost Calculator FAQ

How much does it cost to study abroad?

It depends on the country, university and course. Add tuition, living costs, insurance, flights, visa and one-off costs; this calculator does the sum from your own figures and shows the total per year and for the course.

What is the cost of studying in Germany for Indian students?

Public universities often charge small semester fees rather than full tuition, but you still need living costs, insurance and proof of funds. Enter the figures from the university and the German visa page; nothing is pre-filled because the official amounts change.

What is the cost of studying in the USA for Indian students?

Enter the tuition and estimated cost of attendance from the university’s international student page, the visa fees from the US State Department page and your flights. The page does not guess US costs.

Where do the UK defaults come from?

From GOV.UK: the £558 application fee, the £776 yearly health surcharge and the £1,171 or £1,529 monthly maintenance funds, all read on 24 October 2026.

Is the exchange rate live?

Only when you press “Get today’s rate”, which asks open.er-api.com for the rate. Otherwise you type your own, and the page shows the rate it used.

Can I use it for other countries?

Yes. Choose Other country, type a currency code and enter your own figures.
