Sources, all read on 24 October 2026: ETS, TOEFL iBT score scale 1 to 6: CEFR and IELTS comparison and its report A banded score scale for the TOEFL iBT test (April 2026); ETS Research Report RR-25-02, Aligning Scores of Language Proficiency Tests (April 2025, IELTS Academic). Comparison tables are a guide, not a guarantee: they cannot predict the exact score one person would get on the other test, and each university or visa body sets its own requirement.

A TOEFL to IELTS converter built on ETS’s own tables

This TOEFL to IELTS converter turns a TOEFL iBT score into the IELTS Academic band ETS puts beside it, and an IELTS band into the TOEFL score, for the overall score and for each section. It covers both scales in use: the new 1–6 scale introduced for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026, and the original 0–120 total with 0–30 sections that many score reports and requirements still use.

Nothing is invented or averaged from third-party charts. The new-scale rows are ETS’s published comparison table; the original-scale rows are the concordance from the ETS study of 937 people who took both tests. The page names both documents and the date it read them, and it says plainly when a score falls between two published rows.

How to use the TOEFL to IELTS Converter

  1. Pick the TOEFL scale — the new 1–6 scale or the original 0–120 scale.
  2. Choose a direction: TOEFL to IELTS, or IELTS to TOEFL.
  3. Select overall, or one of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, and type the score.
  4. Read the equivalent score, the CEFR level, and the same score on the other TOEFL scale.
  5. Check the table underneath, where the matching row is highlighted.

TOEFL to IELTS Converter features

Both TOEFL scales

The 2026 banded 1–6 scale and the 0–120 / 0–30 scale, with ETS’s own mapping between them.

Overall and sections

Separate tables for total, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, because the sections do not line up the same way.

Honest about gaps

If ETS lists no row for a score, the result says it falls between two bands instead of guessing a number.

CEFR alongside

The 1–6 score is shown with its CEFR level from ETS’s Table 7.

The new 1–6 scale against IELTS

These are ETS’s overall rows for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026. ETS rounds the average of the four section scores up to the next half band when it builds the IELTS comparison, to avoid placing a test taker above their true level.

Why the answer is sometimes a range

The 1–6 scale has eleven steps where the 0–120 scale had 121, so several IELTS bands can sit against the same TOEFL score — TOEFL 6 matches IELTS 8.0, 8.5 and 9.0 in ETS’s table — and some TOEFL scores, such as an overall 3, have no row of their own. The converter shows the whole range or the two neighbouring bands rather than choosing for you.

Section scores differ from totals: an IELTS 6.5 corresponds to TOEFL Reading 4, Listening 4.5, Speaking 4 and Writing 4.5 on the new scale. If a university asks for “IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0”, convert each section.

What to remember before you rely on it

A comparison table is a guide for setting requirements, not a guarantee of how one person would score on the other test. Universities, employers and visa authorities publish their own accepted scores, and the IELTS or TOEFL they accept may be different from what any table suggests. For the English-test levels in Canada, see the IELTS to CLB calculator; to compare more tests at once, use the English test to CEFR converter.

TOEFL to IELTS Converter FAQ

What TOEFL score is equal to IELTS 7?

On the new 1–6 scale, overall 5 matches IELTS 7.0 in ETS’s table. On the original scale ETS’s concordance puts IELTS 7.0 at 91–99 out of 120.

How do I convert TOEFL 100 to IELTS?

On the original scale, 100 falls in the 100–107 range that ETS lines up with IELTS 7.5. On the new scale a 100 equals about 5 (95–106), which ETS pairs with IELTS 7.0.

What is the new TOEFL score scale?

From 21 January 2026 TOEFL iBT reports each section and the overall score from 1 to 6 in half-point steps, aligned to CEFR levels. ETS shows a comparable 0–120 score on reports for two years.

Is TOEFL harder than IELTS?

They are different tests, and no table settles that. The tables compare scores that test takers actually earned on both tests.

Can I convert IELTS to TOEFL for each section?

Yes. Choose IELTS → TOEFL and pick Reading, Listening, Speaking or Writing; each section has its own row set.

Does my university accept the converted score?

Only the university decides. Use the converter to see where you stand, then check the exact requirement on the admissions page.
