YouTube Thumbnail Maker

Design 16:9 thumbnails with bold text, shapes and your photo, check them at feed size and export under 2 MB.

1280 × 720 px · 16:9, accepted everywhere, easily under 2 MB
Show on the canvas (never exported)

Tap a layer to select it · drag to move (it snaps to the centre and safe-area lines; hold Alt to stop snapping) · corners resize · the round handle rotates (Shift = 15° steps) · double-tap text to edit.

Templates are drawn in code — swap the words, colours and photo placeholders for your own.

Format

Exports at the exact pixel size shown above. 1 KB = 1,000 bytes and 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, so a file under the limit here is under it everywhere.

Your design is saved in this browser automatically. A saved .json file keeps every layer, font choice and photo so you can reopen it on any device.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to a server.

A YouTube thumbnail maker that shows you the small version

Most people decide whether to click a video from a picture the size of a postage stamp. This YouTube thumbnail maker lets you design the full-size 16:9 image — 1280 × 720 pixels, 1920 × 1080 or 4K — and, underneath the canvas, redraws it at the two sizes that matter most: the 168 × 94 “Up next” sidebar and a 320 × 180 phone feed card. If a headline turns to mush at that size, a warning tells you which line and roughly how many pixels tall it ends up.

You build the thumbnail from layers: a gradient or photo background, a cut-out photo of yourself, big outlined text, highlight boxes, arrows, circles, stickers and emoji. YouTube’s timestamp badge is drawn in the bottom-right corner so you don’t hide your best word under it. The download comes out at exactly the size you picked — as a JPG under 2 MB if you like — and everything happens in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

How to use the YouTube Thumbnail Maker

  1. Pick a starting point in Templates — “Big reveal”, “Versus split”, “Tutorial”, “Reaction” and others — or press Start blank in the File tab.
  2. Tap any word on the canvas, then change it in Edit: font, size, outline, drop shadow or glow, and a coloured highlight box behind the text.
  3. Select a grey photo placeholder and add your picture from Add → Photo, logo or cut-out. The photo takes the placeholder’s place and size.
  4. Drag layers to move them; use the corner handles to resize and the round handle to rotate. Layers snap to the centre and to the safe margins.
  5. Check the “How it looks in the feed” previews and any warnings, then choose JPG, keep “Keep the file under 2 MB” ticked and press Download JPG.
  6. Upload it in YouTube Studio under Details → Thumbnail; Save design (.json) keeps an editable copy.

YouTube Thumbnail Maker features

Feed-size previews

Live 168 × 94 and 320 × 180 previews with the timestamp badge, and a warning for text under about 9 pixels at sidebar size.

Contrast check

Each text layer is compared with whatever sits behind it; below a 3:1 contrast ratio you are told to add an outline, shadow or box.

Timestamp-safe layout

The video-length badge is drawn in the corner and the tool warns if a headline sits underneath it.

Real thumbnail typography

16 open-licence Google Fonts such as Anton, Bebas Neue and Bangers, with thick outlines, gradients, glows and per-line highlight boxes.

Exact export, size-capped

PNG, JPG or WebP at exactly 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160; JPG quality is lowered step by step only until the file fits your limit.

Undo, autosave and design files

Undo and redo, autosave in this browser, and a .json design file you can reopen for the next episode.

YouTube thumbnail requirements (as of October 2026)

YouTube Help’s “Add video thumbnails” page lists these limits for custom thumbnails. Your channel must be verified before the Custom thumbnail option appears.

RequirementValueWhat this tool does
Shape16:9 for videos (9:16 for Shorts)All three sizes are 16:9
Resolution“As large as possible”, e.g. 3840 × 2160; at least 640 px wide1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160
File typeJPG or PNGJPG, PNG or WebP (use JPG or PNG for YouTube)
File sizeUp to 2 MB from the mobile app, 50 MB on a computer“Keep the file under” 2 MB is ticked for the HD sizes

Worked example: making a headline readable at 168 pixels

A 1280-pixel-wide thumbnail is shown 168 pixels wide in the sidebar, so everything shrinks to 168 ÷ 1280 = 13% of its size. A 60 px subtitle becomes about 8 px — the tool flags it, because that is smaller than most phone body text. The “Big reveal” template uses 128 px Anton for its main line, which lands at about 17 px: still bold and legible.

Contrast is checked with the WCAG contrast-ratio formula. White text straight onto a pale-yellow area scores about 1.1:1 and triggers a warning; a black outline or a dark highlight box fixes it. Rule of thumb: three to five words, one or two lines, nothing important in the bottom-right corner.

Tips that make thumbnails work

  • One idea per thumbnail. A face, a big word and one arrow or circle usually beats a collage of five things.
  • Cut yourself out first. Remove the background with Remove Background, then add the transparent PNG here and give it a white or coloured glow so it separates from the background.
  • Reuse a style. Save the design file once and swap only the words and photo for each episode.
  • Need a quick resize instead? If you already have a finished image, the YouTube Thumbnail Resizer crops it to 16:9 and compresses it; the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader fetches the current thumbnail of any public video so you can compare.

YouTube Thumbnail Maker FAQ

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

Use 16:9. 1280 × 720 pixels is the classic size and works everywhere; YouTube Help now suggests making it as large as possible, such as 3840 × 2160, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. This YouTube thumbnail maker exports all three sizes exactly.

Why does YouTube say my thumbnail is too big?

From the YouTube mobile app the limit is 2 MB; YouTube Studio on a computer accepts up to 50 MB. Choose JPG and tick “Keep the file under 2 MB” — the tool lowers JPG quality only as far as needed and tells you the final size and quality.

Can I put my own face on the thumbnail?

Yes. Select a grey photo placeholder (or nothing) and add your photo from the Add tab. For a cut-out with no background, run your photo through Remove Background first and add the PNG; this tool does not remove backgrounds itself.

Which fonts can I use?

Sixteen Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License or Apache License — Anton, Bebas Neue, Bangers, Montserrat, Noto Sans Devanagari for Hindi and more — all free to use in thumbnails. If they cannot be downloaded, a similar system font is used.

Will the timestamp badge and guides appear in my download?

No. The timestamp badge, hover buttons, red progress bar and safe margins are previews only and are never drawn into the exported image.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Editing, previews and export all run in your browser. The only network requests fetch fonts from Google Fonts; your design and photos stay on your device.
