A YouTube thumbnail resizer, plus banners and channel icons
YouTube Help now recommends custom thumbnails at 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG — up to 50 MB from a computer but only 2 MB from the YouTube app. A 4K frame grab saved as PNG easily breaks the phone limit, and a design in the wrong shape gets cropped. This YouTube thumbnail resizer crops any image to 16:9 and saves either a 1280 × 720 JPG that fits the 2 MB limit everywhere or a full 3840 × 2160 version, lowering quality only as far as needed.
The same tool makes 9:16 Shorts thumbnails, a 2560 × 1440 channel banner with the TV, desktop, tablet and mobile safe areas drawn over it, an 800 × 800 profile picture with a circle preview, and a 150 × 150 transparent watermark. All the work happens in your browser — unreleased thumbnails never leave your computer.
How to use the YouTube Thumbnail Resizer
- Drop your thumbnail design, screenshot or video frame onto the upload area.
- Keep “Video thumbnail · 1280 × 720 · under 2 MB” (safe for phone uploads), or pick 4K, Shorts, banner, profile picture or watermark.
- Drag the preview to frame the face or the title; use Zoom to crop tighter. Choose “Fit inside” if nothing may be cut off.
- For the banner, keep text and logos inside the green “Safe on all devices” frame.
- Download the file and upload it in YouTube Studio under Details → Thumbnail, or Customisation → Branding.

How the channel banner safe area works
YouTube shows one 2560 × 1440 banner image differently on every screen. A TV shows the whole picture. A computer shows a horizontal strip 423 px tall across the full width. A tablet shows the central 1855 px of that strip, and a phone only the central 1546 × 423 — the safe area. If you upload the minimum 2048 × 1152 instead, the same safe area becomes 1235 × 338 px.
So design the banner as a wide picture with your channel name, upload schedule and logo inside the safe area, and treat everything above and below the strip as background that only TV viewers will see. Turn on the guides to check before you upload.
Thumbnail tips that survive small screens
- Most viewers see your thumbnail at the size of a postage stamp. Use a close-up face, three or four big words at most, and strong contrast.
- The video length badge covers the bottom-right corner, so keep text and faces away from it.
- Use JPG for photos and PNG for flat graphics; both are accepted. If a PNG is over the limit (2 MB in the YouTube app), switch the format to JPG.
- Custom thumbnails only appear as an option once your channel is verified in YouTube Studio.
- To check what an existing video uses, fetch its thumbnail with the YouTube thumbnail downloader; to shrink other images, use the image compressor.
YouTube Thumbnail Resizer FAQ
What is the YouTube thumbnail size?
YouTube Help recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG. Files can be up to 50 MB from a computer but only 2 MB from the YouTube app, so 1280 × 720 as a JPG is the safe choice everywhere. This YouTube thumbnail resizer makes both.
Why does YouTube say my thumbnail is too large?
The file is over the limit for where you upload it: 2 MB in the YouTube app, 50 MB on a computer. Large PNG screenshots are the usual cause. Choose the 1280 × 720 size here: it saves a JPG and lowers quality only until the file is under 2 MB.
What size is YouTube channel art?
Upload 2560 × 1440 pixels, up to 6 MB. Keep text and logos inside the central 1546 × 423 area, because phones show only that part.
Can I resize a thumbnail without cropping it?
Yes. Choose “Fit inside” and pick a background colour. The whole image is placed inside the 16:9 frame with bars filling the rest.
What size is a YouTube profile picture?
800 × 800 pixels works well. YouTube renders it as a 98 × 98 circle and accepts JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG files (not animated) up to 15 MB, so keep your face or logo in the centre — the round preview shows the result.
Are my thumbnails uploaded anywhere?
No. Resizing happens in your browser, so drafts of upcoming videos stay private.
