Dates come from a calculated calendar. Each Hijri month actually begins with the moon sighting announced where you live, so use the shift box to match it. Rulings on voluntary fasting can differ between schools; ask your local scholar or imam.

White days fasting dates (Ayyam al-Bid) for every Hijri month

The white days fasting dates are the 13th, 14th and 15th of each Islamic (Hijri) month, the nights when the moon is full or nearly so, which gives them the name Ayyam al-Bid, “the white days”. This page shows those three days as Gregorian dates for the next 6, 12 or 24 months, so you can see the white days fasting this month and plan the rest of the year at a glance.

It also tells you the next block at the top, with a countdown, and lets you add all of them to your phone or computer calendar as an .ics file. Tick the optional boxes to include Ashura, the Day of Arafah and the Monday and Thursday sunnah fasts.

How to use the White Days Fasting Dates

  1. Choose the Hijri calendar. Umm al-Qura is the Saudi calendar; the tabular civil calendar is a pure calculation.
  2. If your country starts months a day later after the moon sighting, set Local moon sighting to “1 day later”.
  3. Pick how many months to list and tick the extra fasts you want (Ashura, Arafah, Mondays and Thursdays).
  4. Read the next white days in the box, or scan the table for any month.
  5. Press Add to calendar (.ics) to import the dates, or Copy list to paste them anywhere.

What the white days are, and where the practice comes from

Fasting three days of every month is a recommended (sunnah) practice. A hadith reported by al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa’i from Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, records the advice to fast the 13th, 14th and 15th, and many scholars name these the white days. Because the days are counted from the start of the Hijri month, the Gregorian dates change every month and every year, which is why a table is useful.

Fasting on the white days is voluntary. If a day falls in Ramadan, the obligatory fast covers it; in Dhul-Hijjah, the 13th is the last of the Days of Tashreeq, on which Dar al-Ifta of Egypt says fasting is not permitted, and Hanafi sources describe it as prohibitively disliked (makruh tahrimi). Scholars who allow it for pilgrims who cannot offer the hady make an exception for Hajj only. Dar al-Ifta advises fasting the 14th and 15th instead, which is what the table shows.

Hijri months, moon sighting and the table

The Umm al-Qura calendar is calculated in advance, so its months can differ by a day from the month your local community announces after sighting the crescent. If your mosque or country starts a month a day later, choose “1 day later”. A month can have 29 or 30 days, so the 13th falls on a different weekday each time. The Hijri date converter checks any single date, sehri and iftar times give the fasting times for your city, and prayer times cover the day itself.

Mondays and Thursdays are also recommended days for voluntary fasting, and Ashura (10 Muharram, often together with the 9th) and the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul-Hijjah, for those not performing Hajj) are widely observed. Opinions on their details differ between schools, so confirm with a local scholar or imam.
