Hijri date converter: Hijri to Gregorian and back

This free Hijri date converter turns a Gregorian (English) date into the Islamic Hijri date and a Hijri date back into the Gregorian calendar. Type in either box and the other updates at once, with the weekday in English and Arabic, the Hijri date in Arabic numerals, a month calendar and the key dates of that Islamic year.

You can choose the calendar: Umm al-Qura, the official calculated calendar of Saudi Arabia, or the tabular Islamic calendar (the arithmetical “Kuwaiti algorithm” used by many computer systems). Because many communities — in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the UK among them — begin each month after a local moon sighting, there is also an adjustment of one or two days.

Calculated calendar dates can differ from the date announced where you live by a day. For Ramadan and Eid, follow your local mosque or authority.

How to use the Hijri Date Converter

  1. To convert Gregorian to Hijri, pick a date in Gregorian (English) date — or press Today for the Hijri date today.
  2. To convert Hijri to Gregorian, enter the Day, Month and Year (AH) in the Hijri box.
  3. Choose the Calendar: Umm al-Qura (default) or one of the tabular forms.
  4. If the month began a day later where you live, set Local moon-sighting adjustment to +1 day.
  5. Read the result, the weekday and the month calendar, and press Copy result to paste it elsewhere.

Umm al-Qura and the tabular calendar

The Hijri year has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days, about 354 or 355 days, so it moves about 11 days earlier through the Gregorian year. In the Umm al-Qura calendar each month length is decided in advance by astronomical rules for Makkah: since 1423 AH a month begins the evening after the 29th if the new moon happened before sunset and the Moon sets after the Sun. Its tables are computed by the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology.

The tabular calendar ignores the Moon: odd months have 30 days, even months 29, and Dhu al-Hijjah gains a day in 11 years of every 30 (years 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26 and 29). It starts on 1 Muharram 1 AH = Friday 16 July 622 (Julian). It stays within a day or two of the real lunar months.

How the conversion was checked

The automatic test compares the Umm al-Qura table with your browser’s own Islamic calendar on every month from 1318 to 1500 AH, with official month starts from 1420 to 1450 AH, and with the Hijri dates printed by Turkey’s Diyanet and Malaysia’s JAKIM for 19 October 2026 (checked 19 October 2026). The Islamic day begins at sunset, so after Maghrib the next Hijri date has already begun. Dates before 15 October 1582 are shown in the Julian calendar.

For prayer times on any date use the prayer times page, and for Ramadan the sehri and iftar timetable. The Hindu calendar converter handles Vikram Samvat and Shaka dates.

Hijri Date Converter FAQ

What is the Hijri date today?

Press Today: the converter shows today’s Hijri date in the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where the month starts after a local moon sighting it may be one day less — use the adjustment.

How do I convert a Hijri date to Gregorian (English)?

Enter the day, month and year AH in the Hijri box. The Gregorian date and weekday appear at once.

Which calendar does India use?

Muslim communities in India announce each month after the moon is seen, often a day after Saudi Arabia. Use Umm al-Qura with a +1 day adjustment as a guide, and follow the date your local authority announces.

Why does my Hijri date differ by one day?

Calculated calendars and moon sighting do not always agree, and the Islamic day starts at sunset. A one-day difference is normal.

Is the Hijri date converter accurate for old dates?

Umm al-Qura data covers 1318–1500 AH (1900–2077). Outside that range the tabular calendar is used and the page says so; historical dates set by sighting may differ by a day or two.

What is the Kuwaiti algorithm?

A name for the tabular Islamic calendar with the Friday epoch and 11 leap years per 30-year cycle, used by many software calendars.
