A spelling test online that reads the words aloud
This spelling test online works like a teacher’s dictation. Press Start and your browser reads each word aloud; type it and press Enter. Right answers turn green, and wrong ones show exactly which letters were missing or extra, so you see that “recieve” swapped the e and the i. At the end you get a score and can practise only the words you missed.
Paste this week’s spelling list or load one of the built-in lists for grades 1 to 5 and commonly misspelled words. Add a sentence after a bar (word | sentence) and the tool can read it too, to make homophones clear. Teachers can print a numbered spelling test template with an answer key that includes the dictation sentences.
How to use the Spelling Test & Spelling Practice
- Type or paste your words, one per line — or choose a list such as Grade 3 sample words.
- Choose “Listen and spell”, pick a voice and tick “Speak slowly” for younger children.
- Press Start practice, listen, type the word and press Enter. Use “Say the word again” or “Say the sentence” as often as you like.
- Read the feedback, press Enter for the next word, and at the end practise the misspelled words again.
- To print, set a title and choose whether to include the answer key, then press Print test or Download PDF.

A spelling test for 3rd grade (and every other grade)
The built-in lists are short samples to get started; most children practise the list their teacher sends home each week, so paste that in. Grade 3 words such as through, caught, laugh and island are hard because they contain silent or unusual letter patterns; hearing them and typing them repeatedly, with instant correction, is what fixes them.
Mixed spellings between US and UK English (color and colour, for example) are left out of the lists so that the check is never unfair. If your list contains such words, the check expects them exactly as you typed them in the list.
How the checking works
- Capital letters and spaces at either end are ignored, and curly apostrophes count as straight ones.
- The feedback lines up your answer with the correct word by their longest common run of letters, then marks what is extra and what is missing.
- Your word list is saved in this browser so it is still there next time; results are not stored or sent anywhere.
Tips for spelling practice
Little and often works best: one list of 10–15 words, practised for a few minutes on several days. After a test, practise only the misspelled words, then write them by hand — a handwriting practice sheet helps young writers. For revision cards, use the flashcard maker, and for vocabulary, pair this with the word of the day.
Spelling Test & Spelling Practice FAQ
How does this spelling practice online read the words?
It uses your browser’s built-in speech voices (the Web Speech API). The quality and accent depend on your device; choose a different voice from the list if you prefer.
Can I make a spelling test template for my class?
Yes. Paste the words, set the title and press Print test or Download PDF. You get numbered lines with Name and Date, and an optional answer key page with the sentences for dictation.
What if my browser cannot speak?
The tool switches to “Look, cover, write”: each word appears for three seconds, then you type it from memory.
Does it work for a spelling bee?
For practice, yes — add the word and a sentence for each entry and use Say the word again and Say the sentence as a pronouncer would.
Are my words saved?
Your list is kept in this browser only. Scores are not saved or uploaded.
