Convert terabytes to gigabytes (TB to GB)
To convert terabytes to gigabytes, multiply the value in terabytes by 1,000. Use it to see how much space a terabyte drive or cloud plan gives you in gigabytes — and how many games, films or backups fit. This tb to gb converter works both ways: type terabytes or gigabytes into either box above and the other box, the worked formula and the chart below update as you type.
A terabyte (TB) is 1,000 gigabytes, or 10¹² bytes. The binary tebibyte (TiB) is 1,024 GiB, about 10% more. Terabytes describe hard drives, SSDs, network storage boxes and cloud backup plans. One terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes.
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000 megabytes, or one billion bytes. The binary gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes — about 7.4% more. Going the other way, one gigabyte equals 0.001 terabytes. Gigabytes are used for phone storage, RAM, mobile data plans, games and video downloads.
How to convert tb to gb with this tool
- Type a number into the Terabytes (TB) box — it starts at 1 TB as an example.
- Read the answer in the Gigabytes (GB) box and in the result panel, which also shows the formula with your number.
- To go the other way, type into the gigabytes box, or press the swap button to open the GB to TB converter with your value carried over.
- Choose how many decimal places you want, or tap a quick value such as 0.5 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB.
- Press Copy result to paste the conversion into a message, spreadsheet or note.
TB to GB converter features
Converts both ways
Type in the terabytes box to get gigabytes, or in the gigabytes box to get terabytes. The other box follows instantly.
Exact factor
Calculations use 1 TB = 1,000 GB, and rounding is applied only to the answer you see — choose Auto or 0–10 decimal places.
Formula with your number
The working is shown under the result, for example 1 TB × 1,000 = 1,000 GB, so you can check it or copy the method.
Quick values and chart
Tap common values like 0.5 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB, or read the terabytes-to-gigabytes table further down this page.
What Windows will show
Under the answer you see the capacity in GiB — the number Windows reports as “GB” — so a 2 TB drive reads about 1,862.65.
TB to GB formula
The formula is GB = TB × 1,000. It is exact because SI prefixes step by exactly 1,000: 1 TB = 1,000 GB.
The reverse formula is TB = GB ÷ 1,000 — or use the GB to TB converter. Three worked examples:
- A 1 TB hard drive: 1 TB × 1,000 = 1,000 GB
- A 2 TB cloud plan: 2 TB × 1,000 = 2,000 GB
- A 0.5 TB SSD: 0.5 TB × 1,000 = 500 GB
Decimal (GB) or binary (GiB)?
This converter uses decimal SI prefixes, as drive makers, network speeds and mobile carriers do: each step is × 1,000. Computers often count in powers of two instead — 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB and 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB. The IEC introduced these “-bi” names in 1998 so the two systems could be told apart, but Windows still labels binary values “KB”, “MB” and “GB”.
So the same digits can mean two things: 2 TB = 2,000 GB in decimal units, while 2 TB = 1,862.6451 GiB (“GB” in Windows) in binary units. The binary figure is shown under the main answer.
TB to GB quick reference
The values people look up most often, worked out with the exact factor:
- 1 TB = 1,000 GB
- 1 GB = 0.001 TB
- 0.5 TB = 500 GB
- 2 TB = 2,000 GB
- 4 TB = 4,000 GB
- 8 TB = 8,000 GB
Quick tip: Multiply by 1,000. To predict what an operating system will display, multiply by 931.32 instead, since 1 TB ≈ 931.32 GiB.

TB to GB FAQ
How many gigabytes is 4 TB?
4 terabytes is 4,000 gigabytes: 4 TB × 1,000 = 4,000 GB.
How do I convert tb to gb?
Multiply the value in terabytes by 1,000. For example, 8 TB × 1,000 = 8,000 GB. To convert back, divide the value in gigabytes by 1,000 — or use the GB to TB converter.
How many terabytes are in one gigabyte?
One gigabyte is 0.001 terabytes, because 1 GB ÷ 1,000 = 0.001 TB.
What is 8 terabytes in gigabytes?
How many GB does Windows show for a 2 TB drive?
2 TB = 2,000 GB in decimal units, but Windows divides by 1,024³ and reports about 1,862.65 “GB” (really GiB). No space is missing — the same bytes are simply counted differently.
