Convert gigabytes to terabytes (GB to TB)
To convert gigabytes to terabytes, divide the value in gigabytes by 1,000. It is handy for sizing backups, network drives, cloud storage plans and video archives. This gb to tb converter works both ways: type gigabytes or terabytes into either box above and the other box, the worked formula and the chart below update as you type.
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000 megabytes, or one billion bytes. The binary gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes — about 7.4% more. Gigabytes are used for phone storage, RAM, mobile data plans, games and video downloads. One gigabyte is 0.001 terabytes.
A terabyte (TB) is 1,000 gigabytes, or 10¹² bytes. The binary tebibyte (TiB) is 1,024 GiB, about 10% more. Going the other way, one terabyte equals 1,000 gigabytes. Terabytes describe hard drives, SSDs, network storage boxes and cloud backup plans.
How to convert gb to tb with this tool
- Type a number into the Gigabytes (GB) box — it starts at 500 GB as an example.
- Read the answer in the Terabytes (TB) box and in the result panel, which also shows the formula with your number.
- To go the other way, type into the terabytes box, or press the swap button to open the TB to GB converter with your value carried over.
- Choose how many decimal places you want, or tap a quick value such as 128 GB, 256 GB, 500 GB.
- Press Copy result to paste the conversion into a message, spreadsheet or note.
GB to TB converter features
Converts both ways
Type in the gigabytes box to get terabytes, or in the terabytes box to get gigabytes. The other box follows instantly.
Exact factor
Calculations use 1 TB = 1,000 GB, and rounding is applied only to the answer you see — choose Auto or 0–10 decimal places.
Formula with your number
The working is shown under the result, for example 500 GB ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 TB, so you can check it or copy the method.

Binary units shown
The binary result (GiB to TiB) is listed under the decimal one so you can match operating-system figures.
GB to TB formula
The formula is TB = GB ÷ 1,000. It is exact because SI prefixes step by exactly 1,000: 1 TB = 1,000 GB.
The reverse formula is GB = TB × 1,000 — or use the TB to GB converter. Three worked examples:
- A 500 GB SSD: 500 GB ÷ 1,000 = 0.5 TB
- A 256 GB phone: 256 GB ÷ 1,000 = 0.256 TB
- A 4,000 GB (4 TB) drive: 4,000 GB ÷ 1,000 = 4 TB
Decimal (GB) or binary (GiB)?
This converter uses decimal SI prefixes, as drive makers, network speeds and mobile carriers do: each step is × 1,000. Computers often count in powers of two instead — 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB and 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB. The IEC introduced these “-bi” names in 1998 so the two systems could be told apart, but Windows still labels binary values “KB”, “MB” and “GB”.
So the same digits can mean two things: 2,048 GB = 2.048 TB in decimal units, while 2,048 GiB = 2 TiB in binary units. The binary figure is shown under the main answer.
GB to TB quick reference
The values people look up most often, worked out with the exact factor:
- 1 GB = 0.001 TB
- 1 TB = 1,000 GB
- 128 GB = 0.128 TB
- 256 GB = 0.256 TB
- 500 GB = 0.5 TB
- 1,000 GB = 1 TB
Quick tip: Divide by 1,000: 1,500 GB = 1.5 TB. The space an operating system reports may use binary units, where 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB.

GB to TB FAQ
How many terabytes is 750 GB?
750 gigabytes is 0.75 terabytes: 750 GB ÷ 1,000 = 0.75 TB.
How do I convert gb to tb?
Divide the value in gigabytes by 1,000. For example, 2,000 GB ÷ 1,000 = 2 TB. To convert back, multiply the value in terabytes by 1,000 — or use the TB to GB converter.
How many gigabytes are in one terabyte?
One terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, because 1 TB × 1,000 = 1,000 GB.
What is 2,000 gigabytes in terabytes?
Why does Windows show my 1 TB drive as 931 GB?
The drive maker counts 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1,024³ and labels the result “GB” although it means GiB: 10¹² ÷ 1,073,741,824 ≈ 931.32 GiB. No space is missing.
