Height converter: feet and inches to cm, and cm to feet
Heights are quoted in feet and inches in the US, the UK and very often in India, but forms, passports, medical records and most of the world use centimetres or metres. This height converter keeps all four boxes — feet and inches, centimetres, metres and inches only — in sync as you type, so you can start from whichever one you know.
Type 5 and 9 into the feet and inches boxes and the centimetre box instantly shows 175.26; type 162 into centimetres and the feet and inches boxes show 5 ft 3.78 in. A figure beside the converter rises to your height on a 0–220 cm scale, and the height chart underneath lists every height from 4′10″ to 6′6″ — tap any of them to load it.
How to use the Height Converter
- Start from what you know: type feet and inches (for example 5 and 7), or centimetres, metres or total inches.
- Watch the other boxes fill in instantly. Decimals are fine — 5.5 ft or 68.5 in both work.
- Read the big result: centimetres when you typed feet and inches, or feet and inches when you typed centimetres or metres. The caption also shows the nearest whole inch.
- Tap a common height such as 5′ 6″ or 170 cm, or tap any row in the height chart, to load it straight away.
- Press Copy to copy a line like “5 ft 9 in = 175.26 cm” for a form, profile or message.

How to convert feet and inches to centimetres
One inch is exactly 2.54 cm and one foot is 12 inches (30.48 cm). To convert a height, first turn it into inches, then multiply by 2.54:
cm = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54. Example: 5 ft 7 in = (5 × 12 + 7) × 2.54 = 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm.
To go the other way, divide centimetres by 2.54 to get total inches, then split them into feet and inches. Example: 165 cm ÷ 2.54 = 64.96 in. Sixty inches make 5 feet, leaving 4.96 in, so 165 cm is 5 ft 4.96 in — about 5′ 5″.
For any other length — room sizes, screen sizes, distances — use the length converter.

Tips for measuring your height accurately
- Stand barefoot on a hard floor with your heels, back and head against a flat wall, looking straight ahead.
- Lay a hardback book or set square flat on your head, at a right angle to the wall, and mark where its underside meets the wall.
- Measure from the floor to the mark with a steel tape, ideally in centimetres for the most precise number, then convert here.
- People are slightly taller in the morning than in the evening, because the discs in the spine compress during the day — measure at the same time of day if you are tracking a change.
- Forms often ask for height in cm and weight in kg together; the BMI calculator accepts both metric and imperial values.
Feet and inches notation
Heights are often written with prime marks: 5′ 9″ means 5 feet 9 inches. In plain text people type 5'9" or 5 ft 9 in. In India, “5.9 feet” on a biodata or form usually means 5 feet 9 inches, not 5.9 decimal feet — and the two are different: 5.9 ft is 5 ft 10.8 in (179.83 cm), while 5 ft 9 in is 175.26 cm. This height converter keeps feet and inches separate to avoid that mix-up.
