CGPA to GPA Converter — Indian Marks to a US 4.0 GPA

Estimate a US 4.0-scale GPA from an Indian CGPA or percentage — proportional, band and course-by-course methods.

Use the rule printed on your marksheet or degree certificate. For a scale other than 10, the percentage is CGPA ÷ scale × 100.

Default: India’s division boundaries — first division 60%, second 50%, third 40% — mapped to A (4.0), B (3.0) and C (2.0). This is an assumption for illustration, not an official table.

This is an estimate. US universities and credential evaluators (such as WES or ECE) convert Indian transcripts course by course with their own rules, which they do not publish as one fixed table — always quote the CGPA or percentage on your transcript and let the evaluator convert it. Not admissions advice.

A CGPA to GPA converter that shows its working

This CGPA to GPA converter estimates a US-style GPA out of 4 from an Indian CGPA or percentage, the number many US university applications ask for. Because there is no single official conversion, it shows three methods side by side so you can see the range: a straight proportional conversion (CGPA ÷ 10 × 4), a band table that turns a percentage into grade points, and a course-by-course calculation weighted by credits — the way credential evaluators actually work.

Every number is labelled for what it is: an estimate. The band table is editable, so if a university publishes its own conversion you can type it in. Your marks stay in your browser.

How to use the CGPA to GPA Converter (4.0 Scale)

  1. Choose CGPA, Percentage or Course by course.
  2. For a CGPA, enter it with its scale and pick the CGPA-to-percentage rule printed on your marksheet (CBSE uses × 9.5).
  3. Read the band-table GPA, the proportional GPA and the percentage used.
  4. For a closer estimate, switch to Course by course and enter each subject’s marks and credits from your transcript.
  5. Edit the band table if your target university or evaluator gives a different scale.

Formulas and worked example

Proportional: GPA = CGPA ÷ 10 × 4, or percentage ÷ 100 × 4. A CGPA of 8.2 gives 3.28. This is simple arithmetic and tends to understate Indian grades, because Indian marking is stricter at the top — 75% is a distinction, not a C.

Band table: CGPA 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%, which falls in the first-division band, A = 4.0. The default bands follow India’s division boundaries (first 60%, second 50%, third 40%) and treat each as a letter grade. Several converters take a similar view, but no evaluator publishes it as a rule, so it is labelled as an assumption.

Course by course: each course gets its band’s grade points, multiplied by its credits, added and divided by total credits. With 78% (4 credits), 64% (4), 55% (3) and 86% (2) the result is (16 + 16 + 9 + 8) ÷ 13 = 3.77.

What universities and WES actually do

US admissions offices and evaluators such as WES look at each course on your transcript, the grading scale of your university and its pass mark, and then calculate their own GPA. Many applications say not to convert your grades yourself — enter your CGPA or percentage exactly as on your transcript, and use a converted GPA only where a form insists on one, saying it is an estimate.

Need your percentage first? The CGPA to percentage converter covers more rules, and the marks percentage calculator works from subject marks. For a US transcript, the GPA calculator uses letter grades.

CGPA to GPA Converter (4.0 Scale) FAQ

How do I convert CGPA to GPA out of 4?

The simplest way is CGPA ÷ 10 × 4: 8.2 becomes 3.28. Band and course-by-course methods usually give a higher figure because they treat a first-class Indian mark as an A.

How do I convert percentage to GPA on a 4.0 scale?

Proportionally, percentage ÷ 100 × 4 (72% → 2.88). With the division-based band table, 60% and above counts as A (4.0), 50–59% as B (3.0) and 40–49% as C (2.0).

Is there an official CGPA to US GPA conversion?

No. Evaluators and universities each use their own method, applied course by course. Any converter, including this one, gives an estimate.

Which number should I put on my application?

Normally the CGPA or percentage from your transcript, with its scale. Use a 4.0 estimate only when a form requires it.

Is there a WES GPA calculator or scale for India?

WES does not publish a single India-to-US table, so no tool can reproduce a WES GPA exactly. The “Course by course” mode with its editable band table is the closest estimate: enter each course’s marks and credits from your transcript and adjust the bands. Treat the answer as unofficial; only a WES evaluation gives the official figure.

Does WES use this percentage to GPA calculator method?

WES converts each course from your official transcript using its own scales, which it does not publish as one table. The course-by-course mode imitates the approach, not WES’s exact numbers.
