Kundli matching by birth details, by name or by nakshatra
This free kundli matching calculator scores the traditional Ashtakoota guna milan — eight kootas worth 36 points — from the Moon’s rashi and nakshatra of both partners. Give each partner’s birth date, time and place and the Moon is computed from the real sky with the Lahiri ayanamsa; or type a name and the first syllable is mapped to a nakshatra pada the way family almanacs do; or simply pick the nakshatra and pada you already know. Each koota is shown with both partners’ values, the points and a one-line explanation, with notes on Nadi and Bhakoot dosha and, given birth details, the common Mangal dosha rule.
Guna milan is a cultural tradition that families enjoy and consult; it is not a measurement of two people or a forecast of a marriage. This page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice: it gives no verdict and sells no remedies. The 18-point “pass mark” and the bands above it are conventions that differ between regions and astrologers, which is why the result names them as conventions rather than judgements.
How to use the Kundli Matching
- For each partner choose Birth data, Name or Nakshatra. Partner A is the position traditionally scored as the groom and Partner B as the bride; two kootas (Varna and Gana) are asymmetric, so swapping them can change a point or so.
- With birth details, enter the Date, Time and Birth place (or latitude, longitude and time zone). The line under the panel shows the Moon rashi, nakshatra and pada found.
- By name, type the name; the hint shows which syllable was used and which nakshatra pada it maps to. If the name starts with an unusual sound, choose the nakshatra directly instead.
- Read the total out of 36, then each koota’s points in the table and the dosha notes beneath it.
- Press Copy result to share the breakdown.
Kundli Matching features
Three ways in
Birth details computed from the real ephemeris, the Avakahada first-syllable name table, or a direct nakshatra and pada choice — mix and match per partner.
All eight kootas explained
Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8, each with the two partners’ categories, the points and the rule that produced them.
Dosha notes with the classical exceptions
Nadi and Bhakoot dosha are flagged in neutral language, together with the exceptions many astrologers apply (same rashi, same nakshatra with different padas, friendly or identical sign lords).
Mangal dosha check
With birth details for a partner, Mars’ house from the lagna and from the Moon is tested against the common 1-2-4-7-8-12 rule, with the usual own-sign and exaltation cancellation noted.
Accurate Moon positions
The same engine as the kundli generator: Meeus lunar theory, ΔT, nutation and the Lahiri ayanamsa; a warning appears when the Moon is within 0.2° of a rashi or nakshatra boundary.
How the 36 points are scored
Every koota looks only at the two Moons — the rashi (sign) or the nakshatra (lunar mansion) each falls in. The table lists the rule used here. Almanacs differ in a few Vashya, Yoni and Gana cells; the tables used are named under the result, and an automatic test checks worked pairs.
| Koota | Max | Based on | Rule used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Moon rashi | Brahmin > Kshatriya > Vaishya > Shudra; 1 when A’s varna is equal or higher |
| Vashya | 2 | Moon rashi | chatushpada, manava, jalachara, vanachara, keeta; bride-by-groom table of onlinejyotish.com (checked Oct 2026) |
| Tara | 3 | nakshatra | count both ways, divide by 9; remainders 3, 5, 7 score 0, others 1.5 each way |
| Yoni | 4 | nakshatra | same animal 4; seven enemy pairs 0; others 1–3 from the common 14×14 table |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | rashi lords | natural friendship of the two Moon-sign lords: 5, 4, 3, 1, ½ or 0 |
| Gana | 6 | nakshatra | deva, manushya, rakshasa; same 6, deva–manushya 6/5, deva–rakshasa 1, manushya–rakshasa 0 |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Moon rashi | sign distance 2/12, 5/9, 6/8 score 0; all others 7 |
| Nadi | 8 | nakshatra | aadi, madhya, antya; different 8, same 0 |
Kundli matching by name: what it can and cannot do
Traditional naming gives a child a name beginning with the syllable of the Moon’s nakshatra pada at birth (Chu, Che, Cho, La for Ashwini, and so on). Matching by name reverses that table, so it is only as good as the assumption that the name was chosen that way — most modern names were not. Roman spelling also blurs dental and retroflex sounds (त/ट, न/ण), so the hint names the alternative pada when a spelling fits two. Devanagari keeps them apart (टीना ≠ Tina). Treat a name-based score as a parlour version; if a birth time is known, use it, and generate each partner’s chart with the kundli generator. Western readers can compare tropical charts with the birth chart calculator; for a playful score try the love calculator.
Kundli Matching FAQ
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Most sources treat 18 of 36 as the minimum, 18–24 as acceptable, 25–32 as good and 33 or more as excellent, but these bands are conventions and differ between regions and astrologers; Nadi and Bhakoot are often weighed separately from the total. This tool reports the convention, not a verdict.
Can I do kundli matching without the birth time?
Yes, with limits. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so from a date alone it is usually in one nakshatra but can straddle two; entering noon gives a best guess, and the boundary warning tells you when it is close. The name method needs no time at all.
What is Nadi dosha and does it cancel?
Nadi dosha is both Moons in the same nadi (aadi, madhya or antya), scoring 0 of 8. Classical exceptions — same rashi with different nakshatras, same nakshatra with different rashis or padas — are flagged when they apply; the points are left at 0 so you can see both views.
Why does the score change when I swap the partners?
Varna and Gana are scored from Partner A’s side (traditionally the groom), and Vashya uses a directional table, so swapping can move the total by a point or two. Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Bhakoot and Nadi are symmetric.
Is Mangal dosha included in the 36 points?
No. It is a separate traditional check on Mars’ house from the lagna and the Moon, shown only when birth details are given, using the common 1-2-4-7-8-12 rule and noting the own-sign or exaltation cancellation. Many other cancellations exist.
Is this kundli matching free and private?
Yes. No sign-up, no upload; everything runs in your browser.
