Mangal dosha calculator for marriage matching traditions
This free mangal dosha calculator checks the traditional Mangal (Kuja, Chevvai) dosha rule in a Vedic birth chart. From your date, time and place of birth it computes where Mars stood in the sidereal zodiac, counts its house from three reference points — the lagna (ascendant), the Moon and Venus — and shows whether that house is one of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. It then goes through the cancellations most often cited by astrologers and shows which of them apply to this chart.
The result is a description of where Mars was, not a judgement. Roughly half of all birth charts meet the rule from any one reference point, and when the lagna, Moon and Venus are all checked about nine in ten do from at least one of them. That is why traditional matching also looks at both partners. This page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice, and it offers no remedies.
How to use the Mangal Dosha Calculator
- Enter the Date of birth and Time of birth, or tick Birth time unknown.
- Choose the Birth place or type the coordinates; the Time zone fills in and handles historical offsets.
- Pick the Houses rule: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 (the common rule, including the 2nd house as in South India) or 1, 4, 7, 8, 12.
- Read the three panels: the house Mars occupies from the lagna, the Moon and Venus. The summary below them says how many reference points meet the rule.
- Go through Commonly cited cancellations, switch the chart between North Indian and South Indian style, and copy the result or download the chart.
Mangal Dosha Calculator features
Three reference points
Mars’ house counted from the lagna, from the Moon (Chandra lagna) and from Venus, each shown separately rather than merged into one verdict.
Both house rules
The six-house rule with the 2nd house, used in South India and by most software, and the five-house rule found in many North Indian texts.
Eight cancellations checked
Own or exaltation sign, Jupiter’s conjunction or aspect, Mars in a Jupiter sign, the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, the 1st or 8th in Leo or Aquarius, the 4th with the Moon, a Cancer or Leo lagna, and the 7th lord in a kendra.
Mangal dosha without birth time
The Moon and Venus checks still work; the tool warns if the Moon changed sign during that day.
Accurate positions
Mars, Venus, Jupiter and the Moon from the same ephemeris as the kundli generator, with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses.
How the check works
Houses are counted whole-sign, the way a rashi chart is read: the sign holding the reference point is the 1st house and the sign holding Mars is counted from it, inclusive. If the lagna is Scorpio and Mars is in Aquarius, Mars is in the 4th house from the lagna; if the Moon is in Leo, the same Mars is 7th from the Moon. Each count is compared with the selected house list. Some astrologers count from bhava (Sripati or Placidus) cusps instead, which can move Mars into a neighbouring house when it sits near a cusp.
Many traditions weigh the lagna most, then the Moon, then Venus. This tool shows all three and leaves the weighing to the reader.
| Cancellation | What is checked |
|---|---|
| Own or exalted sign | Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn |
| Jupiter | In the same sign as Mars, or 5th, 7th or 9th from it (Jupiter’s aspects) |
| Jupiter’s signs | Mars in Sagittarius or Pisces |
| 2nd house | Mars 2nd from a reference point in Gemini or Virgo |
| 1st or 8th house | Mars 1st or 8th in Leo or Aquarius |
| 4th with the Moon | Mars and the Moon together in the 4th from the lagna |
| Cancer or Leo lagna | Mars rules a kendra and a trikona (yogakaraka) |
| 7th lord | The lord of the 7th sign in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house |
Where the rules come from, and why sites disagree
The house lists and cancellations are taken from widely published summaries (the dekhopanchang.com and vedpanchang.com learning pages, checked 19 October 2026), which trace them to texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; versions differ between regions and families. Results also change with the ayanamsa, the house system and the birth time, since the lagna moves a sign about every two hours. For guna milan between two charts, the kundli matching tool reports the same Mars check for both partners; the kundli generator draws the full chart.
Mangal Dosha Calculator FAQ
How do I use the mangal dosha calculator by date of birth?
Enter the date, time and place of birth. The tool finds Mars’ sign and counts its house from your lagna, Moon and Venus, then shows which commonly cited cancellations apply.
Can I check mangal dosha without a birth time?
Partly. Mars, Venus and usually the Moon stay in the same sign all day, so the checks from the Moon and Venus still work. The lagna needs the time, so that check is left out.
What is the South Indian rule?
South Indian practice usually counts the 2nd house as well, giving 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12. Choose the Houses rule to compare; the chart can also be drawn in South Indian style.
Is Mangal dosha common?
Very. By construction about half of all charts have Mars in one of six houses from any given point, and in a simulation of 10,000 random birth moments with this engine 88% met the rule from at least one of the lagna, Moon and Venus.
Does this tool recommend remedies?
No. It describes a traditional rule and its usual exceptions. It gives no predictions, remedies or advice about marriage.
