Love Calculator

Type two names for a playful love percentage with an animated heart — plus the classic FLAMES game. Just for fun.

Heart filled to the love percentage
63%Romeo + Juliet: Sweet! Butterflies are definitely involved.

Just for fun. The percentage comes from a fixed calculation on the letters of the two names, so the same pair always gets the same number. It says nothing about real feelings or whether a relationship will work.

FLAMES

The classic school-yard name game: cross out the letters the two names share, count what is left, then count round F-L-A-M-E-S striking a letter each time until one remains.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to a server.

A love calculator for a bit of fun

This love calculator takes two names and turns them into a playful “love percentage”, with a heart that fills up to match and a cheeky message to go with it. It is the kind of game people have played in notebooks for generations, made quick to share: copy the result or send it straight from your phone.

Let us be completely clear: it is just for fun and means nothing. The percentage is produced by a fixed calculation on the letters of the names — the same two names always give the same number, in either order — but no calculation on names can say anything about real feelings, compatibility or the future of a relationship.

Below the calculator you can also play FLAMES, the classic school-yard name game that ends in Friends, Lovers, Affection, Marriage, Enemies or Siblings, with every step shown. Names never leave your browser.

How to use the Love Calculator

  1. Type your name and their name. First names work; full names give a different (equally meaningless) result.
  2. Press Calculate love or Enter. The heart fills to the percentage and a message appears.
  3. Press Swap names if you like — the score stays the same, because the order of names does not count.
  4. Use Copy text or Share to send the result, which always includes “just for fun”.
  5. Press Play FLAMES to cross out shared letters and count your way to the final FLAMES word.

Love Calculator features

Same names, same score

The result is deterministic, so a friend typing the same pair gets the same number. Capitals, spaces, punctuation and accents are ignored; in Devanagari every matra and halant counts, so राम and रम score differently.

Order does not matter

The two names are sorted before scoring, so “Sam + Alex” and “Alex + Sam” always match.

Animated heart

An SVG heart fills from the bottom to your percentage and gives a little heartbeat; with reduced motion it simply shows the result.

Fun message bands

Six bands from “friendship is a fine start” up to a perfect 100, with several messages in each so results feel varied.

Share-ready text

One tap copies a short line such as “Priya + Arjun = 66% ❤ … just for fun”, or opens your phone’s share sheet where supported.

FLAMES with workings

Shared letters are struck through in both names, then each round of counting is listed until one letter of FLAMES is left.

How the love percentage is worked out

Each name is lower-cased, accents are removed and anything that is not a letter is dropped, so “ Zoë!” becomes “zoe”. In Hindi and other Indian scripts the vowel signs (matras) and halant are kept, because they change the name: राम and रम are different names and get different scores. The two cleaned names are put in alphabetical order and joined, then run through the FNV-1a hash — a standard, fast way of turning text into a 32-bit number — with a final bit-mixing step. The remainder after dividing by 101 gives a percentage from 0 to 100.

A hash like this is designed so that a tiny change in the input (one letter) gives a completely different output. That makes the score feel random while staying repeatable, and it is exactly why it carries no meaning: it measures nothing about the people behind the names.

How to play FLAMES

Example: “Alice” and “Bob” share no letters, so the count is 8. Counting removes L, E, M, F and S, leaving A — Affection. Different playgrounds use slightly different words; this page uses the most common set.

  1. Write both names. Cross out each letter that appears in both, one for one — two As in one name only cancel two As in the other.
  2. Count the letters left in both names together. Say it is 8.
  3. Write F L A M E S and count 8 letters along, wrapping round; strike the letter you land on.
  4. Carry on counting 8 from the next letter, striking one each time, until a single letter remains.
  5. Read the answer: F Friends, L Lovers, A Affection, M Marriage, E Enemies, S Siblings.

Keep it kind

  • Use it as a laugh with friends, at parties or on a date — not to judge a real relationship.
  • A low score is not a sign of anything. Try a nickname and watch the number jump.
  • Do not use it to tease someone about a crush; not everyone enjoys that kind of attention.
  • For more party fun, try the truth or dare generator, or let the yes or no picker make a small decision for you.

Love Calculator FAQ

Is the love calculator accurate?

No — and it cannot be. It is a game. The number comes from a hash of the letters in the names, which is repeatable but has nothing to do with real compatibility or feelings.

Why do the same names always give the same result?

The calculation is deterministic: it uses no randomness and no clock, only the letters. Anyone who enters the same two names, in either order, sees the same percentage.

Does the order of the names matter?

No. The names are sorted alphabetically before the calculation, so swapping them never changes the score.

What does FLAMES stand for?

Friends, Lovers, Affection, Marriage, Enemies and Siblings. You cross out shared letters, count the rest, and strike letters of FLAMES until one is left.

Are the names I type stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation and the FLAMES game run entirely in your browser, and nothing is saved or uploaded.

Can I share my love calculator result?

Yes. Copy text puts a short result line on your clipboard, and on phones that support it the Share button opens your share sheet.
