Import, export and reset

Paste CSV instead
Header cells look like “Quiz 1 [Quizzes] /20”: name, category in brackets, points available. Importing replaces the current register.

Your register is saved in this browser only. Clearing site data or using another device will not bring it back, so download the CSV for a backup. Student names are never sent anywhere.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to a server.

A free gradebook for teachers that stays in your browser

This gradebook is a class marks register you can use straight away. List your students, add assignments, put each into a category such as Homework, Quizzes or Tests, give the categories weights, and type the marks. The page works out every student’s average in each category, the weighted final percentage and a letter grade, plus the class average, highest and lowest.

It is a simple gradebook calculator for one class at a time: nothing is uploaded, no account is needed and your register is saved in this browser as you type. You can download it as a CSV file for a backup or a spreadsheet, and import a CSV back in.

How to use the Gradebook

  1. Set the categories and weights under “Categories and weights”, for example Homework 20, Quizzes 30, Tests 50.
  2. In the marks grid, rename the sample assignments, choose each one’s category and set the points available.
  3. Add students and type their marks. Leave a cell empty if the work is not graded yet.
  4. Read each student’s Final and Grade on the right and the class figures below the grid; choose a letter scale at the top.
  5. Press Download CSV for a backup, or import a CSV from a spreadsheet. “Start a blank gradebook” clears the register after a second click.

Gradebook features

Weighted categories

Each category is scored on its own and combined using your weights.

Ungraded work is skipped

An empty mark is left out; a category with no marks yet does not drag the average down.

Letter grades

US plus/minus, US simple or UK degree classes.

CSV in and out

Export with grades or paste and import a spreadsheet; formulas in names are neutralised.

Saved locally

Kept in this browser only; no student names leave your device.

How the weighted average is calculated

For each category the page adds the marks a student earned and the marks available on the graded assignments, then divides. A student with 9 of 10 on one homework and 6 of 10 on another has 15 of 20, or 75%, for Homework. The final percentage is the weighted mean of the category percentages: with Homework 20%, Quizzes 30% and Tests 50%, scores of 90%, 90% and 88% give 0.2 × 90 + 0.3 × 90 + 0.5 × 88 = 89%.

If a student has no marks in a category yet, the weights are re-scaled over the categories that do. That keeps a missing quiz from counting as zero. If your school does count a missing piece of work as zero, type 0 in the cell.

CSV format for import and export

The first row holds the headings. Each assignment heading carries its category in square brackets and its points after a slash; the Final and Grade columns are written on export and ignored on import.

Keeping your data safe

Because the register lives in your browser, clearing site data, using a private window or switching device removes it. Download the CSV after each marking session. For custom cut-offs, use the percentage to grade calculator, and to score essays against criteria try the rubric maker.

Gradebook FAQ

Is this gradebook really free and private?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account and keeps names and marks on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

How do I weight homework, quizzes and tests?

Give each category a weight (they act as ratios, so 20, 30 and 50 or 2, 3 and 5 behave the same) and assign every assignment to a category.

What happens to an empty mark?

It is treated as not graded and left out. Type 0 if a missing piece should count as zero.

Can I import marks from Excel or Google Sheets?

Save the sheet as CSV, with headings like “Quiz 1 [Quizzes] /20”, and use Choose a CSV file or paste it. Columns without the bracket format become 100-point assignments in the first category.

Can I change the letter grade cut-offs?

This gradebook offers US plus/minus, US simple and UK classes. For a custom scale, calculate the percentage here and use the percentage to grade calculator.

Why did my gradebook disappear?

Browser data is local. If site data was cleared or you opened another browser, the register is not there. Keep a downloaded CSV as a backup.
