A German grade calculator using the modified Bavarian formula
This German grade calculator converts a grade from any grading system — an Indian 10-point CGPA, a percentage, a US GPA — to the German scale, where 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 is the lowest pass. It uses the modified Bavarian formula (modifizierte bayerische Formel), the method German universities use when they have to turn a foreign grade into a German one for admission or credit recognition.
You enter your grade, the best possible grade and the lowest passing grade of your system; the tool shows the formula with your numbers, the exact result, and the value cut to one decimal or rounded, because universities differ on that last step. If you came here wanting a German grade to Indian CGPA conversion, the formula can be rearranged; see the section below.
How to use the German Grade Calculator (Modified Bavarian Formula)
- Pick a grading scale preset, or choose “Custom scale” and type your own limits.
- Enter your grade (Nd): your CGPA, percentage or GPA.
- Check Nmax (best possible grade) and Nmin (lowest passing grade) against your university’s table or anabin, and edit them if they differ.
- Read the German grade, the descriptor (sehr gut, gut, befriedigend, ausreichend) and the working line.
- Compare the “cut after 1 decimal” and “rounded” values and use the one your target university prescribes.
German Grade Calculator (Modified Bavarian Formula) features
Any scale
Works for ascending scales (higher is better) and descending ones, with editable Nmax and Nmin.
Both rounding rules
Shows the exact value, the value cut after one decimal, and the value rounded to one decimal (halves to the better grade).
Pass mark check
Flags a grade that is below the lowest passing grade of its own scale.
Shows the working
The formula with your numbers, ready to copy into an application note.
The formula and a worked example
N = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) ÷ (Nmax − Nmin), where N is the German grade, Nd your grade, Nmax the best possible grade in your system and Nmin the lowest passing grade. The result lies between 1.0 (Nd = Nmax) and 4.0 (Nd = Nmin).
Example: a CGPA of 8.26 on a 10-point scale with a pass mark of 4. N = 1 + 3 × (10 − 8.26) ÷ (10 − 4) = 1 + 3 × 1.74 ÷ 6 = 1.87. Cut after one decimal that is 1.8; rounded it is 1.9.
German grade bands
| German grade | Descriptor | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 – 1.5 | sehr gut | Very good |
| 1.6 – 2.5 | gut | Good |
| 2.6 – 3.5 | befriedigend | Satisfactory |
| 3.6 – 4.0 | ausreichend | Sufficient (lowest pass) |
| above 4.0 | nicht ausreichend | Not passed |
Where to find Nmax and Nmin
The Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) keeps the anabin database, which many universities consult for the best grade and the lowest pass mark of each country. Some faculties use the typical top grade instead of the theoretical maximum, and some countries have several pass marks (India’s differ by university), so the presets here are only starting points. Rounding also varies: some universities cut the result after one decimal, others round it, so ask which applies.
German grade to Indian CGPA
There is no official reverse table. Solving the formula for Nd gives Nd = Nmax − (N − 1) × (Nmax − Nmin) ÷ 3; for a German 1.7 and a 10/4 scale that is 10 − 0.7 × 6 ÷ 3 = 8.6. Treat it as an estimate and use your original transcript where you can. To start from a CGPA, the CGPA to percentage converter and CGPA to GPA converter are useful first steps.
German Grade Calculator (Modified Bavarian Formula) FAQ
What is the modified Bavarian formula?
It is N = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) ÷ (Nmax − Nmin), used by German universities to convert a foreign grade to the German scale from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (lowest pass).
How do I convert my CGPA to a German grade?
Enter your CGPA as Nd, the maximum CGPA as Nmax and the pass CGPA as Nmin. A CGPA of 8.26 on a 10-point scale with pass mark 4 gives 1.87 (about 1.8 or 1.9).
Is the result official?
No. The university or the recognising body decides the final converted grade, and it may use different Nmax and Nmin values or a different rounding rule.
Why are there two rounded results?
Universities handle the last decimal differently: some cut the number after one decimal place, others round it. Use the one your university states.
Does it work for percentages and US GPA?
Yes. Choose the percentage or GPA preset or type your own Nmax and Nmin, for example 100 and 40 for a 40 % pass mark.
Which is the best and which the lowest German grade?
1.0 is the best and 4.0 the lowest passing grade. Anything worse than 4.0 is a fail.
