An Excel viewer for when you don’t have Excel
An .xlsx attachment arrives on your phone, a tablet or a borrowed computer with no Office installed. This Excel viewer opens it right in the browser and shows it the way Excel would: every sheet as a tab, column letters and row numbers, the header row frozen at the top, merged cells, and numbers, dates, percentages and currency in their own formats, including Indian lakh and crore grouping such as ₹1,25,000.00.
Tap any cell to see what is really inside it: the formula (for example =SUMIF(Invoices!D$2:D$201,A3,Invoices!H$2:H$201)), the stored value behind a date or a rounded number, and the number format. Search the sheet, jump between matches, show only matching rows, or sort by any column, all without changing the file.
The workbook is read by SheetJS (Apache-2.0) in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed, so salary sheets, bank exports and GST registers stay on your device.
How to open an Excel file online
- Tap or drop the file on the box at the top. .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, older .xls, LibreOffice .ods, Apple Numbers and CSV all open. A sample invoice register is shown until you choose a file.
- Switch sheets with the tabs above the grid. Sheets that are hidden in Excel are listed too, marked “hidden”.
- Tap a cell: its address, contents or formula appear in the bar above the grid, with the stored value and number format underneath. On a computer, move with the arrow keys.
- Type in Search this sheet to highlight matches and step through them with ↑ and ↓, or tick Only rows that match to filter.
- Tap a column letter to sort A→Z, again for Z→A, and a third time to restore the original order. Reset sort & search puts everything back.
Excel Viewer features
Looks like Excel
Values appear exactly as their number formats display them: 12.50%, 15/01/2026, 1,234,567.89, ₹12,60,000.00, TRUE, #DIV/0!.
Formulas on tap
Cells with a formula have a small corner mark; tapping one shows the full formula and the value Excel last calculated.
Frozen header, letters and numbers
Column letters, row numbers and the top rows (one by default, up to ten) stay visible while you scroll in any direction.
Merged and hidden cells
Merged ranges are drawn as one cell. Hidden rows, columns and sheets are hidden as in Excel, and can be shown with one tick.
Huge sheets stay smooth
Only the rows on screen are drawn, so a sheet with hundreds of thousands of rows scrolls as easily as a short one.
Search, filter, sort
All in view only. The file is never changed, and nothing is saved anywhere.
What the viewer shows, and what it doesn’t
Files up to 100 MB open; very large workbooks take a few seconds to read, because the whole file is unpacked in the tab first. A password-protected workbook cannot be opened until the password is removed in Excel.
| Shown | Not shown |
|---|---|
| Cell values in their number, date, percent and currency formats | Fonts, fill colours, borders and conditional formatting |
| Formulas and their last calculated results | Recalculation: values are those saved in the file |
| Merged cells, hidden rows, columns and sheets | Charts, pictures, shapes and comments |
| Every sheet, up to 500 columns each | Pivot-table layouts beyond their saved values |
Tips
- A date that looks wrong is usually a number with a date format. Tap it: the bar shows the stored serial number and the format, so you can tell a real date from text.
- Sorting and filtering here are for reading only. Merged cells are shown unmerged while a sort or filter is on.
- To get the data out, use XLSX to CSV or Excel to PDF; to check two versions, use Compare Excel Files; for plain CSV files, the CSV Viewer adds column statistics.
Excel Viewer FAQ
How can I open an XLSX file without Excel?
Tap the box at the top of this page and choose the file. It opens in your browser with all sheets, formulas and formats, with no Office, app or account needed.
Can I view Excel files on my phone?
Yes. The viewer works in Chrome, Safari and other mobile browsers: swipe to scroll the grid, tap cells to read their contents and use the tabs to change sheets.
Can I see the formulas in the file?
Yes. Tap a cell with the small corner mark and the bar above the grid shows its formula, such as =E2*F2, along with the result Excel saved.
Does it open old .xls and LibreOffice .ods files?
Yes: .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .ods, Apple Numbers and CSV files all open.
Can I edit the file?
No. This page is a viewer. Sorting, filtering and search change only what you see, never the file.
Is my spreadsheet uploaded?
No. It is read by JavaScript in your browser and never leaves your device.
