An Excel splitter that gives each team its own file

One master sheet, but every manager should only see their own rows. This Excel splitter cuts a worksheet into one file per value in a column — per team, region, branch, salesperson or month — so you can send each person exactly their part. It can also cut a long sheet into parts of N rows, or save every sheet of a workbook as its own file.

Each part keeps the header row (and any title rows above it), and cells keep their type and number format: dates stay real Excel dates, amounts stay numbers and column widths are carried over. Save the parts as separate .xlsx files in a ZIP, as one workbook with a sheet per part, or as CSV files.

The workbook is opened with SheetJS (Apache-2.0) and split by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, which matters for payroll, customer and sales data.

How to split an Excel file

  1. Drop your .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm, .ods or .csv file on the box. A sample staff roster is loaded first so you can see how it works.
  2. Choose Split by: “Column value” for one part per team or region, “Every N rows” for equal chunks, or “Sheet” to save each sheet separately.
  3. Pick the Sheet and the Column. Set Rows to repeat at the top to 1 for a plain header, or 2–3 when a report title sits above the header.
  4. Choose Save as: separate Excel files, one workbook with a sheet per part, or CSV files.
  5. Check the parts list — click a part to preview it — then press Download all, or download any single part from its row.

Excel Splitter features

Split by column value

One part per distinct value, in the order the values first appear; the rows inside each part keep their original order.

Header and title kept

The top rows you choose are repeated in every part, including a merged title across the top, and an AutoFilter is set on the header.

Formats survive

Numbers stay numbers, dates stay dates with their own format (for example 12-Apr-2021), and column widths are copied.

Three outputs

Separate .xlsx files in a ZIP, one workbook with a tab per value, or UTF-8 CSV files with a BOM for Excel.

Every sheet as its own file

Sheet mode turns a 12-tab workbook into 12 files, optionally keeping formulas.

Private

No upload, no account: the workbook never leaves your browser.

What is copied into each part

Formulas are replaced by their last calculated values in column and row splits on purpose: once rows move to another file, a formula such as =SUM(D2:D40) or a lookup into another sheet would point at the wrong cells. The free SheetJS edition does not write cell styles, so headers lose their bold and colours.

Tips for clean splits

  • Values are grouped exactly as they appear after trimming spaces, so “Sales” and “sales” become two parts. Tidy the column first, or use the Pivot Table Maker to see the distinct values and their counts.
  • Blank rows are skipped; rows with an empty value in the chosen column go into a “(blank)” part.
  • Excel limits sheet names to 31 characters and forbids / \ ? * : [ ] (Microsoft, “Rename a worksheet”, checked 30 October 2026), so tab names are shortened and cleaned. File names keep more of the value.
  • For a CSV file too large to open in Excel, use the CSV Splitter, which streams the file. To put parts back together, use the Excel Merger.

Excel Splitter FAQ

How do I split an Excel sheet into multiple files by column value?

Drop the workbook here, choose “Column value”, pick the sheet and the column (for example Team), and press Download all. You get a ZIP with one .xlsx file per value, each with the header row.

Can I split one sheet into multiple sheets in the same workbook?

Yes. Set Save as to “One workbook, a sheet per part”. Each value or chunk becomes its own tab, named after the value.

How do I save each sheet of a workbook as a separate file?

Choose “Sheet (one file per sheet)”. Every sheet is saved as its own .xlsx file named after the workbook and the sheet, all in one ZIP.

Will my dates and numbers change?

No. Cells keep their type and number format, so dates stay dates and amounts stay numbers. Only formulas in column and row splits become their calculated values.

Is my workbook uploaded?

No. It is read and split in your browser; the files are created on your device.
