Choghadiya Calculator features

Real local sunrise and sunset

Each choghadiya is one-eighth of that day’s actual daylight or night at your coordinates, not a fixed 90-minute block, so times match printed panchangs.

Checked against a published panchang

The built-in self-test compares full day and night tables for New Delhi and New York with a widely used online panchang, to within two minutes.

Now and next

On today’s date the running choghadiya is highlighted, and the panel shows the next good period; before sunrise it correctly shows the previous night.

English, Hindi and Gujarati

Amrit / अमृत / અમૃત and the rest, with weekday names in the same script.

Any city, any time zone

Ninety preset cities plus custom coordinates, with the browser’s time-zone database for daylight saving time in the USA, UK and Europe.

How choghadiya is calculated

The Hindu day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise. Daylight (sunrise to sunset) is divided into eight equal parts and the night (sunset to the next sunrise) into eight more — each part is a choghadiya, about four ghatis or 1½ hours, longer by day in summer and shorter in winter. Each choghadiya is ruled by a planet and named after it: Sun → Udveg, Venus → Char, Mercury → Labh, Moon → Amrit, Saturn → Kaal, Jupiter → Shubh, Mars → Rog.

The first day choghadiya belongs to the weekday’s own planet, and the rest follow in the order Udveg, Char, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, so the eighth is the same as the first. The night starts from the planet of the weekday four days later (Sunday night begins with Jupiter’s Shubh) and steps in the order Shubh, Amrit, Char, Rog, Kaal, Labh, Udveg.

Good and bad choghadiya

Amrit (best), Shubh (good) and Labh (gain) are the three considered auspicious; Char is neutral and traditionally used for travel; Udveg, Kaal and Rog are considered inauspicious for new beginnings, though tradition still assigns each a use. Some almanacs also mark Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela and Kaal Ratri inside the table; their method is not published consistently, so this page does not show them. For a fuller panchang-based search use the muhurat finder, and for the 24 planetary hours of the same day the hora calculator.

Why choghadiya times differ between cities and websites

Because each choghadiya is a fraction of local daylight, Mumbai and Kolkata differ by about half an hour, and two dates a week apart differ by a minute or two. Tables can also differ by a minute depending on how sunrise is defined; this page uses the Sun’s upper edge with standard refraction, the panchang convention. If your family follows a temple calendar that uses a fixed 6 am sunrise, its times will differ. See the sunrise and sunset calculator for the underlying times.
