Sunrise and sunset calculator for any place and date
This sunrise sunset calculator gives the exact sunrise, sunset and solar-noon times for any location on Earth on any date — today, a wedding next spring or a trek in 2030. Pick one of more than 90 preset cities (including every major Indian city), type latitude and longitude, or press Use my location and let your browser fill the coordinates. Times are shown in the location’s own time zone, with daylight saving handled automatically.
Alongside sunrise and sunset you get the day length and how much it changed since yesterday, the sun’s highest altitude, the morning and evening golden hour, and civil, nautical and astronomical twilight. A seven-day table shows the trend — handy for photography, runs, fasting hours, fishing or hiking. Everything is computed in your browser with the NOAA solar position algorithm, with no account or internet lookup. To convert a time into another zone, use the time zone converter; for the current time in several cities, try the world clock.
How to use the Sunrise Sunset Calculator
- Choose a City from the list, or select “Custom coordinates…” and type the Latitude and Longitude. On a phone, Use my location fills them in after you allow access.
- Check the Time zone. Presets set it for you; for custom coordinates pick the zone the place actually uses.
- Pick the Date — it starts on today’s date at that location.
- Read sunrise and sunset in the highlighted panel, then solar noon, day length and the change from yesterday below.
- Scroll down for the twilight and golden-hour times and the next seven days; switch between 24-hour and 12-hour clocks any time.
Sunrise Sunset Calculator features
NOAA algorithm
Uses the same equations as the NOAA Solar Calculator (based on Jean Meeus’ Astronomical Algorithms), accurate to about a minute for most of the world.
Real time zones
Offsets and daylight-saving changes come from your browser’s IANA time-zone database, so a July date in New York is shown in EDT and a January one in EST.
Twilight and golden hour
Civil, nautical and astronomical dawn and dusk, plus the warm-light golden hours after sunrise and before sunset.
Polar day and night
Above the polar circles the tool reports midnight sun or polar night instead of a meaningless time, and says which twilight still occurs.
Seven-day table
Sunrise, sunset, day length and the daily change for a week from the chosen date.
Private
Coordinates and dates never leave your device; the browser’s location is used only if you ask.
What the twilight times mean
Civil dawn is the start of morning civil twilight (“first light”) and civil dusk its end in the evening (“last light”). Sunrise and sunset are the moments the upper edge of the sun’s disc touches the horizon, which — because the atmosphere bends light — happens when the sun’s centre is geometrically 0.833° below it. That is why an equinox day lasts about 12 h 10 min, not exactly 12 hours.
| Phase | Sun’s position | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Golden hour | From sunrise up to 6° above the horizon (and the same before sunset) | Soft, warm light for photography; long shadows |
| Civil twilight | Sun 0° to 6° below the horizon | Bright enough to work outdoors without lights; street lights usually come on |
| Nautical twilight | 6° to 12° below | Horizon still visible at sea; brightest stars appear |
| Astronomical twilight | 12° to 18° below | Sky nearly dark; faint objects become visible to astronomers |
| Night | More than 18° below | Fully dark sky |
Solar noon, day length and the equation of time
Solar noon is when the sun is highest and due south (or due north in the southern hemisphere). It is rarely at 12:00 on the clock: your time zone may be centred on a different longitude, daylight saving shifts it by an hour, and the Earth’s tilted, elliptical orbit makes the sun run up to 16 minutes fast or slow through the year — the equation of time. In Mumbai, solar noon falls around 12:40 IST because India’s zone is centred on 82.5° E, well east of the city.
Day length depends on latitude and the sun’s declination. At the equator it stays close to 12 hours all year; at 50° north it swings from about 8 hours in December to 16 hours in June; inside the Arctic and Antarctic circles the sun does not set at all for part of summer (midnight sun) or rise for part of winter (polar night). The “vs yesterday” figure shows the pace of change, fastest around the equinoxes and slowest around the solstices.
Accuracy and limits
- Times are computed for a sea-level horizon with standard atmospheric refraction. Mountains, tall buildings or a high viewpoint shift the real moment by a few minutes.
- National almanacs use the same assumptions, so results agree with their tables to within a minute or so.
- Above about 60° latitude, twilight can last all night in summer; the tool then reports that a phase “does not occur”.
- For custom coordinates, make sure the time zone matches the place, or the clock times will be shown in the wrong zone.
Sunrise Sunset Calculator FAQ
What time is sunrise and sunset today?
The calculator opens on today’s date for a preset city in your time zone (New Delhi if none matches). Pick your city or press Use my location for your exact spot; the highlighted panel shows today’s sunrise and sunset.
How is golden hour calculated?
The morning golden hour runs from sunrise until the sun is 6° above the horizon, and the evening one from 6° above the horizon until sunset. Near the equator that is about 25 minutes; at high latitudes in winter it can last well over an hour.
Why is solar noon not at 12:00?
Clock time is the same across a whole time zone, but the sun is highest at a different moment for every longitude, and the equation of time adds up to ±16 minutes. Daylight saving moves clock noon a further hour away.
Does the calculator handle daylight saving time?
Yes. Each time is formatted with the browser’s IANA time-zone database for the chosen zone and date, so DST switches on and off on the right dates for that region.
How accurate are the times?
The NOAA algorithm is accurate to within about a minute for latitudes below 72° and still good near the poles, apart from days when the sun barely grazes the horizon. Local terrain and weather add small differences.
Is my location sent anywhere?
No. The browser’s geolocation result only fills the latitude and longitude boxes on your device, and the calculation runs entirely in the page.
