Where almanacs differ
  • The two calendars disagree on most month starts: Mool Nanakshahi months begin on fixed dates (Chet 14 March, Vaisakh 14 April …) while Bikrami / SGPC months begin with the sangrand, which moves by a day from year to year (Vaisakh 13 April 2025, 14 April 2026). The Akal Takht adopted the Mool calendar in 2003; the SGPC returned to the amended, Bikrami-based calendar in 2010 — both remain in use.
  • SGPC sangrand here is the Hindu day (sunrise to sunrise) holding the Sun’s entry into the sign at Amritsar — so a sangrand before sunrise belongs to the previous date, as on 13 April 2025 (the Sun entered Mesha at 03:21 on the 14th).
  • Gurpurabs, masya and puranmashi of both calendars are on the Nanakshahi calendar page; this page converts dates and lists sangrands.
  • Sangrand times are about six minutes earlier than Drik Panchang’s (a small ayanamsa difference), which matters only when the Sun changes sign within minutes of sunrise.

Calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa for the place shown. Temple, family and printed almanacs can choose a different day for some festivals — follow your local priest or almanac. Rahu kalam and similar periods are shown for tradition, not as advice. Everything is calculated in your browser.

Bikrami and Nanakshahi dates, both ways

This free converter gives the Punjabi (Bikrami) date and the Nanakshahi date of any day from 1900 to 2099 — for example Kattak 8, Nanakshahi 558 for 24 October 2026 — with the month in Gurmukhi, and turns a Punjabi date back into an English one. It shows both reckonings in use among Sikhs and Punjabis: the Bikrami / SGPC calendar, whose months start on the sangrand, and the Mool Nanakshahi calendar with fixed dates.

The month grid gives each English date with its desi date and the tithi at sunrise in Amritsar, and the month list is a table of sangrand dates for the year with the moment the Sun changes sign — so it answers “sangrand kab ki hai” and “sangrand in October 2026” at a glance. Lohri, Maghi and Vaisakhi are listed for each calendar.

How to use the Bikrami & Nanakshahi Date Converter

  1. Pick a Date or press Today to read the Punjabi date.
  2. Choose the Calendar: Bikrami / SGPC or Mool Nanakshahi.
  3. Keep Amritsar or choose another Place; sunrise sets the Bikrami sangrand day and the tithi.
  4. To go the other way, enter a Nanakshahi year, month and day under Convert a Bikrami date and press Show this day.
  5. Read the sangrand list for the year, or tap a day in the grid; press Copy Bikrami date to paste it.

How the Punjabi solar months work

In the Bikrami reckoning followed by the SGPC, each month begins on its sangrand, the day the Sun enters the next sign of the sidereal zodiac: Vaisakh with Mesha, Jeth with Vrishabha and so on to Chet with Meena. The Hindu day runs from sunrise, so the sangrand is the day — sunrise to sunrise — that contains the Sun’s entry; when the Sun changes sign before dawn, the sangrand is the previous date. That is why Vaisakhi fell on 13 April in 2025 and on 14 April in 2026. Months have 29 to 32 days.

The Mool Nanakshahi calendar of Pal Singh Purewal, adopted by the Akal Takht in 2003, fixes the months to the Gregorian calendar instead: Chet begins on 14 March, Vaisakh on 14 April, Jeth on 15 May, and Phagan has 30 days, or 31 in a leap year. Its year, like the SGPC’s, is counted from 1469, the year of Guru Nanak’s birth: Nanakshahi 558 began in March 2026. The Bikrami Samvat number (2083 from Chet Sudi 1, 19 March 2026) follows the lunar year.

Sources, checks and limits

The SGPC sangrand rule and the Mool month table are those of this site’s Nanakshahi calendar, which were checked against an SGPC-based Punjabi jantri; for 2025–2027 this page gives exactly the same 36 sangrand dates. Positions use the Lahiri ayanamsa and the VSOP87 Sun, and sangrand moments come out a few minutes earlier than Drik Panchang’s, which only matters when the Sun changes sign close to sunrise.

Gurpurab dates, which differ between the two calendars, are on the Nanakshahi calendar page; masya and puranmashi are also on Amavasya and Purnima dates. For the lunar Vikram Samvat date used in North India see the Hindu calendar converter. Gurdwara committees announce some dates themselves, so check locally.

Press Today: the large text shows the desi month and day with the Nanakshahi year; switch the calendar to compare SGPC and Mool Nanakshahi.

Sangrand kab ki hai?

The month list shows every sangrand of the year; in October 2026 the Kattak sangrand is on Saturday 17 October (SGPC), and 1 Kattak is 15 October in the Mool calendar.
