Muhurat for your baby’s ceremonies, from the date of birth
This free page helps plan four of a child’s early sanskars — Namkaran (naming), Annaprashan (the first rice), Mundan (the first haircut) and Karnavedha (ear piercing). Enter the baby’s date of birth and whether the baby is a boy or a girl: the page lists the ages at which tradition places each ceremony — for example the 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th month for a boy’s Annaprashan — and searches any of those periods for days and times that pass the published panchang rules, for your city.
Every day of the search shows its weekday, tithi, nakshatra, yoga and month with a ✓ or ✗, and the candidate time window left after Rahu Kaal and Bhadra are removed, so you can see why a day is in or out. Use it for a mundan muhurat 2026 or annaprashan muhurat shortlist to take to your purohit, who will confirm the date and the exact time.

Traditional ages and the rules used
Drik Panchang’s pages on these sanskars (checked 25 October 2026) give the ages used here. Namkaran is usually done on the 11th or 12th day after birth, when no separate muhurat is needed; if it is later, a muhurat is chosen by the rules. Annaprashan is held in the 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th month for a boy and the 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th for a girl. Mundan is done in the 3rd, 5th or 7th year for a boy and in an even year for a girl. Karnavedha is done on the 10th, 12th or 16th day, or else in the 6th, 7th or 8th month, or later in an odd year. Other almanacs give slightly different months — some prefer the 6th to 8th month for a boy’s Annaprashan — so treat the table as a guide.
The day rules come from the same source. Mundan needs a movable, gentle or short nakshatra (or Jyeshtha), a good tithi in either paksha, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, daylight, and the Sun in Makara, Kumbha, Mesha, Vrishabha or Mithuna. Annaprashan needs one of sixteen auspicious nakshatras, Shukla 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 13, Purnima or Krishna 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 13 and the same weekdays. Karnavedha avoids the rikta tithis and Amavasya, Kharmas and Chaturmas. Rahu Kaal, Bhadra and the Vyatipata and Vaidhriti yogas are cut out of every window.
| Ceremony | Boy | Girl |
|---|---|---|
| Namkaran | 11th or 12th day | 11th or 12th day |
| Annaprashan | Months 6, 8, 10, 12 | Months 5, 7, 9, 11 |
| Mundan | Years 3, 5, 7 | Even years |
| Karnavedha | Day 10, 12 or 16; months 6–8; odd years | Same |
What a purohit adds, and limits
A muhurat for a sanskar also depends on the lagna (rising sign) at the moment of the ceremony, the eighth house being empty, the child’s own janma nakshatra and month, and Chandra and Tara bala for the child. This page does not check those, and some families follow a different ritual calendar altogether. Use the shortlist as a starting point and confirm the date and time with your family priest or purohit.
This page is for tradition and entertainment, not prediction or advice, and never a guarantee of any outcome. To edit any rule — add Saturday, allow Krishna paksha, change the nakshatras — use the muhurat finder, which has the same presets; for name letters by birth star see baby name letters.
Baby Ceremony Muhurat (Namkaran, Mundan, Annaprashan, Karnavedha) FAQ
When should Annaprashan be done?
Traditionally in the 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th month for a boy and the 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th for a girl; enter the birth date to see the dates.
Is there a mundan muhurat in December?
Usually not by these rules: the Sun is in Vrishchika or Dhanu, outside the Makara-to-Mithuna months preferred for Mundan.
Can I find a namkaran muhurat by date of birth?
Yes — the 11th and 12th days are listed, and if they have passed the page searches the following weeks.
Why is my preferred day rejected?
Press Why? on that row: it shows which rule failed — weekday, tithi, nakshatra, yoga, season or Rahu Kaal.
Does it work outside India?
Yes. Choose your city; sunrise, Rahu Kaal and the windows follow local time.
Is the date final?
No — confirm it with your purohit, who will also check the lagna and the child’s birth star.
