Minimum connection times are typical planning values; the airline’s published MCT for the exact airport, terminals and ticket decides whether a connection is protected. Times you enter are local to each airport.

Layover calculator: will you make the connection?

A cheap fare with a 55-minute connection is only cheap if you catch the second flight. This layover calculator works out the real time between landing and your next departure — correctly across time zones and daylight-saving changes — and compares it with a realistic minimum connection time for the kind of transfer you are making: domestic or international, same terminal or a terminal change, a passport-control stop, arrival into the United States, or a self-transfer on separate tickets where you must collect bags and check in again.

The verdict is blunt: comfortable, tight, risky or impossible. Then drag the delay slider to see how late the first flight can be before the connection breaks. Itineraries with several stops are handled connection by connection, and the worst one sets the headline, so a long trip through Dubai and London is judged on its weakest link.

How to use the Layover Calculator

  1. For each connection, type where you change planes and enter the scheduled arrival time and the next departure time, each with its own time zone (start typing a city, e.g. Asia/Kolkata or Europe/London).
  2. Pick the connection type that matches your tickets and terminals, or choose Custom and enter the minimum connection time your airline publishes.
  3. Read the layover, the minimum, the buffer and the verdict for each connection; the headline shows the weakest connection of the trip.
  4. Drag What if the arriving flight is late? to simulate a delay and see when a comfortable connection becomes tight or risky.
  5. Press Add another connection for multi-stop itineraries and Copy summary to share the result.

Layover Calculator features

Time-zone correct

Each time is entered as local time with its IANA zone, so a 06:00 arrival in London and a 09:00 departure from Paris are correctly two hours apart, and a fall-back night in New York is handled.

Realistic minimums

Eight presets from 45 minutes (domestic, same terminal) to 4 hours (change of airport), plus a custom value for the MCT printed on your booking.

Delay what-if

One slider applies a delay to every arriving flight and re-grades all connections instantly.

Multi-leg itineraries

Add as many connections as your trip has; the headline reports the riskiest, and the summary lists them all.

Clear verdicts

Risky means below the minimum, tight means under 30 minutes of slack, comfortable means a reasonable buffer; long layovers are flagged too.

Minimum connection times used here

Airlines and airports publish an official minimum connection time (MCT) per airport, terminal pair and ticket type. A connection shorter than the MCT cannot normally be sold on one ticket; one equal to it is legal but leaves no slack. The presets below are typical values and the basis of the verdicts:

TransferPreset minimumWhy
Domestic → domestic, same terminal, one ticket45 minNo security re-screen at many airports; bags are through-checked.
Domestic with a terminal change60 minBus or train between terminals, usually a security re-screen.
International → international, same terminal75 minTransit security and a long walk; typical at Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Istanbul.
International with a terminal change90 minHeathrow, Paris CDG, Frankfurt, Delhi T1↔T3 need the inter-terminal transfer.
International → domestic (immigration and customs)120 minPassport control, bag collection and re-check at the first point of entry.
Arriving into the US or Canada150 minImmigration queues and mandatory customs on first arrival, even when in transit.
Separate tickets / self-transfer180 minNo protection if you miss it: collect bags, check in again, clear security.
Change of airport in the same city240 minHeathrow ↔ Gatwick, Narita ↔ Haneda, Delhi ↔ Noida: ground transfer plus check-in deadlines.

How to read the verdict

  • Risky — the layover is below the minimum. On one ticket the airline will usually rebook you if you miss it; on separate tickets you pay for a new flight.
  • Tight — above the minimum but with less than 30 minutes to spare. Fine if the first flight is on time; sit near the front and know your gate.
  • Comfortable — 30 minutes or more of slack. Most delays of up to half an hour are absorbed.
  • Comfortable, long (over 5 hours) — time to leave the transit area for a meal or a lounge. Long (over 12 hours) — consider a transit hotel or a city visit if your visa allows.
  • Impossible — the departure is before the arrival, usually a sign the date or the time zone is wrong.

Tips for connections in India and abroad

At Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, international-to-domestic transfers require immigration, bag collection and a fresh security check; allow two hours even on a single ticket. Gulf hubs such as Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi are designed for 60–90-minute international transits. In the United States every arriving international passenger clears immigration and customs at the first airport, so 2½ hours is the realistic minimum. Once the connection looks safe, use the Jet Lag Planner to plan sleep across the time change and the Airport Code Lookup to check time zones and distances.

Layover Calculator FAQ

How long should a layover be for an international flight?

Plan for 75–90 minutes on one ticket within a transit-friendly hub, two hours where you must clear immigration, and at least three hours on separate tickets. The layover calculator applies these minimums and tells you how much slack is left.

Is a 45-minute layover enough?

Only for a domestic connection in the same terminal on a single ticket, and even then a short delay makes it tight. For international transfers 45 minutes is usually below the published minimum.

Does the calculator handle different time zones?

Yes. Enter each time as it appears on the ticket (local time) together with the airport’s time zone; the real elapsed time is calculated in UTC, including daylight-saving changes.

What happens if I miss a connection?

On a single ticket the airline must rebook you on its next available flight. On separate tickets or self-transfers you are not protected — which is why the calculator uses a 3-hour minimum for them.

Can I leave the airport during a long layover?

If you have (or do not need) a visa for the country, and your bags are checked through, a layover of 6 hours or more usually allows a short visit. Be back airside at least 90 minutes before departure, 2 hours in busy hubs.

Where do I find the official minimum connection time?

On the airline’s website or in your booking under connection rules; airports also publish MCTs by terminal. Enter it with the Custom option.
