An RTI application format you fill in once and print

This free RTI application format generator writes your request under Section 6(1) of the Right to Information Act, 2005 — in English or in Hindi — from a few details: your name and address, the Public Information Officer you are writing to, and your questions, one per line. It numbers the questions, adds the fee line for an Indian Postal Order, demand draft or other mode (or the BPL exemption), lists the enclosures, and asks for a reply within 30 days.

You get a clean one-page application to download as a PDF or Word file, print, or copy as text. The questions can also be copied on their own for the online portal’s 3,000-character box. Everything is assembled in your browser; nothing you type is uploaded. It is a template, not legal advice — the Act and the rules of the authority you write to decide what applies.

How to use the RTI Application Format Generator

  1. Choose English or हिन्दी, and whether the public authority belongs to the Central Government or a state.
  2. Enter your name and the address where the reply should be sent; phone and email are optional.
  3. Type the PIO’s designation, the office and its address, then your questions — one per line.
  4. Under Fee, pick how you are paying the ₹10 (or tick BPL), and add the postal order number if you have it.
  5. Check the preview and the word count, then download the PDF or Word file, print it, sign it and send it with the fee.

RTI fee and rules for central public authorities (as of 24 October 2026)

Source: Right to Information Rules, 2012, G.S.R. 603(E) of 31 July 2012, and the guidelines on rtionline.gov.in (read 24 October 2026). The online portal is only for Central Government ministries, departments and their public authorities. States and Union Territory governments make their own RTI rules, fees and payment modes — the fee box here is editable for that reason.

Rule (RTI Rules, 2012)What it says
Rule 3 — application fee₹10 with each application; it should ordinarily not exceed 500 words, excluding annexures, but may not be rejected only for being longer.
Rule 4 — fee for information₹2 per page for A4 or A3 copies; actual cost for larger paper or samples; inspection free for the first hour, then ₹5 for each further hour or part of it.
Rule 5 — BPL exemptionNo fee under Rules 3 and 4 from a person below the poverty line, with a copy of the certificate issued by the appropriate government.
Rule 6 — paymentCash against a receipt, demand draft, banker’s cheque or Indian Postal Order payable to the Accounts Officer, or electronic payment where available.

What the Act gives you

  • Section 6(1): apply in writing or electronically, in English, Hindi or the official language of the area, to the PIO (or the Assistant PIO, who forwards it).
  • Section 6(2): you need not give a reason or any personal details beyond what is needed to contact you.
  • Section 6(3): if another public authority holds the information, the application must be transferred within five days and you must be told.
  • Section 7(1): a decision within 30 days, or 48 hours where the information concerns the life or liberty of a person.
  • Section 19(1): if there is no reply or you are unhappy with it, a first appeal lies to the officer senior to the PIO within 30 days.

Writing questions that get answers

  • Ask for records that exist: “copies of the file notings on file number …”, “the date on which … was received”, “the reasons recorded for …”.
  • Avoid “why” questions and opinions; the PIO supplies information held, not explanations.
  • Give a period and a reference number so the record can be found quickly.
  • Keep each line to one request — it is easier to answer, and to appeal if part of it is refused.

RTI Application Format Generator FAQ

What is the RTI application format?

There is no compulsory form for central authorities: a plain application to the PIO with your name and address, the information sought, the ₹10 fee and your signature is enough. This RTI application format generator lays it out in the usual order.

Can I write an RTI application in Hindi?

Yes. Section 6(1) allows English, Hindi or the official language of the area. Choose हिन्दी here and the whole application switches; print it or save it as PDF from the print dialog, or download Word.

How much is the RTI fee and how do I pay it?

For Central Government authorities it is ₹10 (Rule 3), by Indian Postal Order, demand draft, banker’s cheque, cash with a receipt or online. Copies cost ₹2 a page. States set their own fees, so check the state’s rules.

Do people below the poverty line pay?

No. Attach a copy of the BPL certificate issued by the government; tick the BPL box and the fee line and enclosures change.

Is there a word limit?

Rule 3 says an application should ordinarily not exceed 500 words, excluding annexures, but it cannot be rejected only for that. The counter here shows where you stand; the online portal’s box takes 3,000 characters.

Can I get the RTI application format as a PDF?

Yes — download the English version as a PDF or a Word file. The Hindi version is printed by your browser, where “Save as PDF” keeps the Devanagari exactly right.

Is my information stored or sent anywhere?

No. The application is built in your browser, and drafts are kept only on this device until you delete them.
