Resume skills finder: what to list for your job title
A good resume skills list mixes what you can do, the tools you use and the keywords an employer’s software looks for. This finder gives you that list for your job title. Type a title such as “customer service representative”, “software engineer”, “staff nurse” or “fresher” and you get four groups to choose from: skills, tools and certificates, people (soft) skills and keywords for applicant tracking systems.
Tap a skill to switch it off if it is not true for you, then copy the selected skills straight into your resume or LinkedIn. The lists cover 21 job families, from retail and customer service to software, healthcare, trades and teaching, plus a general list of resume skills for freshers when a title is not recognised. They were written for this page, so they are suggestions to adapt, not an official skills database.
How to use the Resume Skills Finder by Job Title
- Type your job title, or choose a job family from the list.
- Read the four groups of skills and tap any you cannot honestly claim to switch them off.
- Press Copy selected to copy what is left, or Copy all for the full list.
- Paste into the skills section of your resume and match the wording to the job advert.
- Use the strongest skills again in your experience bullets, each with a result.

How to use a skills list well on a resume
Recruiters and applicant tracking systems both scan for skills, so the words matter. Use the exact term from the job advert where it is true for you: “customer relationship management” and “CRM” may both be searched, so use the one in the advert and, if space allows, the other in brackets. Put the most relevant skills first, and keep a skills section to roughly eight to fifteen items so it stays readable.
Do not just list adjectives. A skill is convincing when it is attached to evidence in your experience section: a number of customers handled, a time saved, a target met. Our STAR method answer builder helps turn those examples into interview answers, and the ATS resume checker shows whether your resume contains the keywords in a job description.
| Type | Example (customer service) | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Skill | Complaint resolution | Skills section and bullets |
| Tool | Zendesk, Excel | Skills or a tools line |
| People skill | Empathy, patience | Summary and bullets, with proof |
| Keyword | first contact resolution | Bullets, in the advert’s wording |
Resume skills for freshers and career changers
- Freshers: list computer skills, languages, academic projects, internships and college activities. Evidence can be a project, a society role, a competition or a volunteering stint.
- Career changers: lead with transferable skills such as communication, customer handling, reporting or leading a team, then the tools of the new field you have learned.
- Certificates and licences (first aid, driving licence classes, software certificates) belong in the tools line only if they are current.
- Always match the job. If a skill in the list is not in the advert and not true for you, leave it out.
