Receipt generator for cash, UPI, cheque and card payments
This free receipt generator writes a proper acknowledgement of money received: who paid, who received it, how much in figures and words, how it was paid (cash, UPI, cheque, bank transfer or card) with the transaction reference, what it was for, and which invoice it settles. Add the invoice total and any earlier payments and the balance still due is printed too.
It prints on A4 or US Letter with your logo and signature, or on a 58 mm or 80 mm thermal roll for counter printers — the PDF is exactly as wide as the roll and as long as the receipt needs. You can itemise a receipt (say, a membership and a mat) or simply enter the amount. For cash receipts above ₹5,000 in India it adds a revenue-stamp box automatically.
Receipts, logo and signature stay in this browser and numbers count up automatically. A receipt confirms payment; it is not a tax invoice. This template is not legal or tax advice.

What a payment receipt should show
- The word “Receipt”, a unique receipt number and the date.
- The name of the person or business receiving the money (with GSTIN if registered) and the payer’s name.
- The amount in figures and in words, and the currency.
- How it was paid and the reference that proves it — UPI transaction ID, cheque number and bank, or bank transfer UTR.
- What the payment is for and, where relevant, the invoice it settles and the balance still due.
- The signature of the person who received the money, plus a revenue stamp where the law requires one.
Revenue stamps, GST and other rules in India
Revenue stamp: Article 53 of Schedule I to the Indian Stamp Act, 1899 charges ₹1 stamp duty on a receipt for an amount above ₹5,000. In practice it is affixed on cash receipts above that amount and signed across; receipts for bank transfers are usually not stamped. States can have their own stamp acts, so follow local practice.
GST: a receipt only acknowledges payment. If you are GST-registered and the payment is for a sale, issue a tax invoice. If it is an advance for services, GST law expects a receipt voucher (CGST Rule 50) showing the tax on the advance — create the invoice later with the invoice generator.
Cash limits: the Income-tax Act restricts receiving ₹2 lakh or more in cash from one person for one transaction or in a day, so take large amounts by bank transfer or UPI.
Worked example
A yoga studio receives ₹12,500 in cash from a member against invoice INV-2026-0187 for ₹15,000. The receipt shows “Twelve thousand five hundred rupees only”, the balance due of ₹2,500.00 and a revenue-stamp box, because the cash amount is above ₹5,000. Paid by UPI instead, the stamp box disappears and the UPI transaction ID is printed. Itemised, the same ₹12,500 is a ₹9,000 membership plus a ₹3,500 mat. Need just the words for a cheque? Try the number to words converter; landlords should use the rent receipt generator.
Receipt Generator FAQ
How do I make a payment receipt?
Enter the receipt number, date, your details and the payer’s name, then the amount, payment mode and reference, and what it is for. The receipt generator writes the amount in words and creates a PDF you can print or send.
Is a revenue stamp required on a receipt?
In India a ₹1 revenue stamp is due on receipts for more than ₹5,000 under the Indian Stamp Act, 1899, and is commonly affixed on cash receipts above that amount. State rules can differ.
What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?
An invoice asks for payment and, if it is a tax invoice, records the sale and tax. A receipt confirms that money has been received. One invoice can have several receipts if it is paid in parts.
Can I print receipts on a thermal printer?
Yes. Choose “80 mm thermal roll” or “58 mm thermal roll”; the PDF page is exactly that width and as long as the receipt. Print it at 100% scale with no margins.
How do I show a part payment?
Enter the invoice total and anything paid earlier. The receipt shows the amount paid now and the balance due.
Are my receipts stored online?
No. They are saved in this browser only. Use Export JSON for a backup.
