A random text generator with real English words

This random text generator produces random English words, random sentences, whole paragraphs, or strings of random characters. Unlike lorem ipsum, which is scrambled Latin, the words here are real, everyday English — “Our curious lighthouse might borrow a fluffy kite near the old harbor.” is nonsense, but it is readable nonsense, with real word shapes, real letter frequencies and grammar that looks right at a glance.

That makes it useful wherever Latin filler gives the wrong impression: testing how an English interface wraps and truncates real words, filling a design mock-up that clients will actually read, creating sample data, generating prompts for Pictionary, charades or creative writing, or practising typing. Choose a part of speech, set word lengths or sentence lengths, and add a seed if you need the same text again later.

How to use the Random Text Generator

  1. Choose what to generate: Words, Sentences, Paragraphs or Character strings, and enter how many.
  2. For words, pick a kind (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs or any), a length range and letter case.
  3. For sentences and paragraphs, set the words per sentence and sentences per paragraph, and decide whether to include questions and exclamations.
  4. For character strings, tick the character sets, add your own characters if you like, and choose the string length.
  5. Type a seed to get the same result every time, or leave it empty and press “Generate new text” for a fresh set. Copy or download the result.

Random Text Generator features

Real English vocabulary

About 740 common words — 405 nouns, 136 verbs, 145 adjectives and 51 adverbs — chosen to be familiar, countable and inoffensive.

Grammatical sentences

Sentences follow simple English patterns, so subjects agree with verbs, “a” and “an” are used correctly and questions start with “Did”, “Why” or “Where”.

Exact length control

Every sentence stays within your word range — even an exact length such as 20 words — and paragraphs within the sentence range.

Word lists by part of speech

Generate only nouns for drawing games, only adjectives for writing prompts, or any mix, with no repeats and a length filter.

Random character strings

Lower case, capitals, digits, symbols and your own characters, with look-alikes such as I, l, 1, O and 0 left out on request.

Repeatable with a seed

The same seed and settings always give the same output, which is ideal for test fixtures and screenshots.

Random text generator or lorem ipsum?

Designers often prefer lorem ipsum precisely because nobody tries to read it. Use real-word text when the length, rhythm and wrapping of English matter, and lorem ipsum when you want reviewers to look at the layout, not the words.

Where the words come from

Every word appears in the Moby Part-of-Speech II list compiled by Grady Ward and placed in the public domain (Project Gutenberg eBook #3203), with the same part of speech it is used for here. From its 230,000 entries a small set of everyday words was picked for this page: nouns that take “a” or “an”, verbs that take an object and adjectives that make sense before a noun.

Other languages are not offered yet. The only public-domain word lists for French, German, Spanish and Italian that could be verified (Moby Language II) write accents with ad-hoc ASCII codes that cannot be reliably turned back into proper spelling, so they were left out rather than shipped with errors.

About the randomness

With a seed, the text comes from a fast pseudo-random generator (Mulberry32) started from your seed, so it is reproducible but predictable. Without a seed, the starting point comes from your browser’s cryptographic random source, and character strings are drawn from it directly. For passwords, use the dedicated Password Generator, and for IDs and tokens the Random String Generator; to time yourself typing the generated paragraphs, try the Typing Speed Test.

Random Text Generator FAQ

How do I generate random English sentences?

Choose “Sentences”, enter how many, and set the number of words per sentence. The random text generator builds each sentence from real English words using simple grammar patterns, so they read naturally even though they do not mean anything.

Can I generate a list of random nouns for a drawing game?

Yes. Choose “Words”, set “Kind of word” to Nouns, tick “No repeated words” and pick how many. You get everyday objects, animals and people such as lantern, giraffe or baker.

How is this different from the lorem ipsum generator?

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin; this tool uses real English words and grammatical sentences. Use it when you need text that looks like genuine English, and lorem ipsum when you want obviously fake filler.

What does the seed do?

A seed makes the output repeatable: the same seed and settings always produce the same words, sentences or strings, on any device. Leave the seed empty to get new random text each time you press “Generate new text”.

Can I use the random character strings as passwords?

They are fine for test data, but for passwords use the Password Generator, which is built for that purpose and never uses a predictable seed.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. All text is generated in your browser.
