A random letter generator for games, teaching and practice
The Random Letter Generator picks letters from A to Z at random — one at a time or hundreds at once. Choose uppercase, lowercase or mixed case, limit the draw to vowels or consonants, exclude awkward letters such as Q, X and Z, and switch on “No repeats” when each letter should appear only once.
It doubles as a game host. The Alphabet game mode draws one big letter per round for Scattergories, Stop the Bus, Name-Place-Animal-Thing or Categories, starts a countdown timer, and remembers which letters have already been played so every round gets a fresh one.
Teachers use it for phonics and spelling drills, speech therapists for articulation practice, improv groups for prompts, and quiz hosts for an impartial draw. Every letter comes from your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so the draw is fair and nothing is sent to a server.
How to use the Random Letter Generator
- Choose Generate letters for a plain draw or Alphabet game for one letter per round with a timer.
- Set How many letters, the Case and the Letters to use (all, vowels only or consonants only).
- Type any letters to leave out in Exclude letters, and tick No repeats if each letter may appear at most once.
- Press Generate letters or tap the Space bar. The result appears in the big panel and in the history list.
- In game mode, pick a Round timer, press Start round, and use Next letter for each new round. Reset alphabet starts over.
Random Letter Generator features
Uniform random draw
Each letter is chosen with crypto.getRandomValues and rejection sampling, so every available letter has exactly the same chance.
Vowels, consonants and exclusions
Restrict the pool to the five vowels or the 21 consonants, and drop any letters you type into the exclusion box.
No-repeat mode
Shuffles the available letters with the Fisher–Yates method and deals them out — ask for 26 and you get the whole alphabet in random order.
Game mode with timer
A large single letter, a 30 s to 3 min countdown with a progress bar that turns red for the final 10 seconds, and a record of letters already played.
Keyboard and copy
The Space bar draws again; Copy puts the current letters on the clipboard; the history keeps the last 30 picks.
Up to 500 letters
Generate long strings for ciphers, codes, typing practice or random IDs, with or without spaces.
Games you can play with a random letter
- Scattergories / Categories: draw a letter, start the timer, and everyone writes one answer per category beginning with that letter. Unique answers score.
- Stop the Bus / Name-Place-Animal-Thing: the Indian and British classroom classic — a name, a place, an animal and a thing for the drawn letter; first to finish shouts “stop”.
- Alphabet charades: act out a word starting with the letter.
- I packed my bag: each player adds an item beginning with a fresh random letter.
- Phonics drills: show one lowercase letter at a time for sound recognition; vowels-only mode isolates the short vowel sounds.
How likely is each letter?
With all 26 letters in play, each one has a 1 in 26 chance (about 3.85%) on every draw. Excluding Q, X and Z leaves 23 letters at 1 in 23 (4.35%). Vowels-only gives 1 in 5. Because draws with repeats allowed are independent, the same letter can come up twice in a row — that is expected about once every 26 pairs, and it is not a bug. Tick “No repeats” if you want a letter used once only.
Real English text is nothing like this: E is used about 12% of the time and Z under 0.1%. If you want letters weighted like English, say for word-game practice, draw from a word list instead using the Random Name Picker.

Random Letter Generator FAQ
How does the random letter generator choose letters?
It uses the browser’s cryptographic random number generator with rejection sampling to pick an index into the available letters, so every letter in the pool has an equal probability. No seed or pattern is used.
Can I generate only vowels or only consonants?
Yes. Choose “Vowels only” or “Consonants only” under Letters to use. Y is treated as a consonant. You can combine either with Exclude letters to remove more.
How do I get the whole alphabet in random order?
Tick “No repeats”, set How many letters to 26 and press Generate. You get every letter from A to Z exactly once in a shuffled order.
How does the alphabet game mode work?
Each press of Start round or Next letter draws one letter that has not been played yet and starts the countdown you chose. The list of played letters is shown under the timer, and Reset alphabet clears it.
Can I exclude letters like Q, X and Z?
Yes. Type them into Exclude letters (generate mode) or Skip hard letters (game mode). Letters can be typed with or without spaces and in any case.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The big letter panel is designed to be read across a table, and the timer vibrates the phone when time is up where the browser allows it.
