An avatar generator that turns any name into a unique picture
This avatar generator creates a profile picture from any piece of text — a name, a username, an email address or a random seed. Choose one of five styles: a classic mirrored identicon, a tile pattern of geometric shapes, a symmetrical pixel creature, a soft gradient blob or a friendly face. Pick a palette, background and shape, then download a PNG up to 1024 px or a crisp SVG.
Avatars are deterministic: the text is hashed with SHA-256 and the 32 bytes choose every colour, cell and curve, so “Ada Lovelace” gives the same avatar today, tomorrow and on any device. That makes it ideal for default profile pictures in apps, comment sections, test data and mock-ups, where each user needs a stable, recognisable image without uploading a photo. All styles are drawn by this page’s own code; no third-party artwork is used and nothing is uploaded.
How to use the Avatar Generator
- Type a name, email or any text in the box, or press Random for a fresh random seed.
- Click a Style — each thumbnail already shows your text in that style.
- Choose a Palette, a background (from the palette, a solid colour or transparent) and a square, rounded or circle shape.
- Pick a PNG size and press Download PNG, or Download SVG / Copy SVG code for a vector file.
- For a whole team or class, paste one name per line in the batch box and press Download ZIP.
Avatar Generator features
Five original styles
Identicon, shapes, pixel creature, gradient blob and face — all generated from scratch, so you can use them freely.
Same text, same avatar
SHA-256 hashing plus a seeded generator means results never change between visits, browsers or devices.
Palettes with contrast
Six built-in palettes or unique hues derived from the text; foreground colours are chosen for the strongest contrast with the background.
PNG or SVG, any shape
Square, rounded or circle with transparent corners; PNG from 64 to 1024 px or a resolution-free SVG.
Batch ZIP
Up to 500 names in one ZIP, numbered in list order, with a live preview strip of the first 24.
How the avatar is built from your text
First the text is tidied: trimmed, Unicode-normalised (NFC) and, unless you untick the option, lower-cased with repeated spaces collapsed, so “ADA LOVELACE” and “ada lovelace” match. Its UTF-8 bytes are hashed with SHA-256. For the identicon, the lowest bit of each of the first 15 bytes switches on one cell in a 3 × 5 half-grid that is mirrored into the familiar symmetrical 5 × 5 pattern; byte 16 picks the colour. Worked example: “alice” hashes to 2bd806c9…, which gives the rows 10101 / 00000 / 01110 / 10101 / 11111.
The other styles need more choices, so the last 16 bytes of the hash seed a small deterministic random generator (sfc32). It decides tile shapes and rotations, which pixels of the creature are filled, the bend of each blob and the eyes, mouth and tilt of each face. Because everything flows from the hash, a single changed letter gives a completely different avatar.
Choosing a style
| Style | Looks like | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Identicon | Symmetrical 5 × 5 blocks | Developer tools, code hosting, forums |
| Shapes | Bauhaus-like tiles of circles and triangles | Workspaces, projects, playful apps |
| Pixel | Retro 8 × 8 mirrored creature with eyes | Games, communities, kids’ apps |
| Blob | Smooth organic shapes on a gradient | Calm, modern brands; group chats |
| Face | Simple head with eyes and mouth | Friendly default profile pictures |
Privacy notes for avatars made from emails
Hashing happens entirely in your browser, but a hash is not a secret. Anyone who guesses an email address can compute the same avatar and confirm the match, so do not rely on a generated avatar to keep an email private. For public avatars, seed them with a username or a random ID instead. If you prefer letters to pictures, the Initials Avatar Generator makes “AL”-style avatars, and the Username Generator can suggest seeds.
Avatar Generator FAQ
Is this avatar generator free for commercial use?
Yes. The avatars are created by this page’s own drawing code from your text, with no stock images or third-party art, so you can use them in apps, websites and products without attribution.
Will the same name always give the same avatar?
Yes, as long as the style, palette, background and shape settings are the same. The picture depends only on the SHA-256 hash of the (normalised) text, so it is identical on every visit and device.
What is an identicon?
An identicon is a small symmetrical image derived from a hash of some text, used to tell users apart at a glance without photos. Code hosting sites and forums popularised them as default avatars.
Can I make random avatars instead?
Press Random to fill in a random seed made with your browser’s secure random generator. Keep the seed text if you want to recreate the same avatar later.
How do I make avatars for a whole list of users?
Paste one name per line into the batch box and press Download ZIP. Files are numbered in list order, and the same name always produces the same image.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The hashing and drawing run in your browser. Only the ZIP library is loaded from a CDN when you download a batch.
