Convert PowerPoint presentations to OpenDocument (.odp)
This PPTX to ODP converter saves Microsoft PowerPoint presentations as OpenDocument Presentation files, the native format of LibreOffice Impress and Apache OpenOffice. The conversion is done by LibreOffice running inside your browser, so slide masters, layouts, text, tables, charts, pictures, speaker notes and transitions are translated the same way desktop LibreOffice handles them.
Teachers, NGOs, public offices and Linux users often work in Impress or are asked to keep slides in an open, vendor-neutral format. Old PowerPoint 97–2003 .ppt decks convert too, which makes this a handy way to bring an archive of lectures into a format you’ll be able to open for decades. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use the PPTX to ODP Converter
- Drop one or more PowerPoint files (
.pptx,.ppsx,.potx,.pptmor old.ppt) on the box above. - Press Convert to ODP and approve the one-time 79 MB LibreOffice download the first time.
- Read the summary: number of slides and objects, with the text found on each slide so you can confirm the content.
- Download each .odp, or all of them as a ZIP.
- Open the files in LibreOffice Impress, OpenOffice or Collabora and check animations and fonts once.
PPTX to ODP Converter features
LibreOffice’s PowerPoint import
Decks are read with LibreOffice 24.8’s PowerPoint filters and written with Impress’s native ODF writer.
Hidden slides and notes kept
Hidden slides stay hidden and speaker notes stay attached to their slides.
Slide masters become master pages
Layouts and backgrounds are kept as Impress master pages, so new slides still match the design.
Old .ppt too
PowerPoint 97–2003 files convert directly to ODP.
Batch and ZIP
Move a whole folder of presentations to OpenDocument at once.
Private
Your slides are converted on your device; nothing is sent to a server.
What survives the move to ODP
| In the PowerPoint file | In the ODP |
|---|---|
| Text, bullets, tables, pictures, shapes | Editable Impress objects |
| Slide masters and layouts | Master pages |
| Charts | Impress charts with their data |
| Speaker notes and hidden slides | Kept |
| Transitions and common animations | Kept; complex motion paths and triggers may differ |
| SmartArt | Converted to grouped shapes |
| Macros (.pptm) | Not converted |
OpenDocument Presentation in brief
ODP is part of the OpenDocument Format, an OASIS standard since 2005 and the international standard ISO/IEC 26300. Like PowerPoint’s .pptx (Office Open XML, ISO/IEC 29500), an .odp file is a ZIP package of XML files and pictures; the difference is that ODF is designed and maintained as a vendor-neutral standard that any program may implement without licences.
Browsers can’t draw OpenDocument slides, so after converting this page lists the text of each slide rather than a picture preview. To share a version that opens anywhere, make a PDF with PowerPoint to PDF; to go back to PowerPoint, use ODP to PPTX.
Tips
- PowerPoint themes often use Calibri or Aptos; LibreOffice substitutes Carlito for Calibri with identical widths. Other fonts are replaced by similar ones unless installed on the computer that opens the .odp.
- Check embedded video and audio after converting; media links can need re-inserting in Impress.
- Converting Word documents too? DOCX to ODT does the same for text documents.
- LibreOffice needs a recent Chrome, Edge or Firefox and about 1.5 GB of free memory; Safari and iPhone browsers can’t run it yet.
PPTX to ODP Converter FAQ
How do I convert PPTX to ODP for free?
Drop the PowerPoint file above and press Convert to ODP. The first conversion downloads LibreOffice once (79 MB); after that each deck converts in a second or two. No account and no watermark.
Can LibreOffice Impress open PPTX files directly?
Yes, but converting to .odp gives you a native Impress file that saves without compatibility warnings and is easier to keep in an open-format archive.
Will animations and transitions be kept?
Transitions and common entrance, emphasis and exit animations are kept. Complex motion paths, triggers and some PowerPoint-only effects may play differently.
Can I convert an old .ppt file to ODP?
Yes. Drop the .ppt file just like a .pptx; LibreOffice reads PowerPoint 97–2003 presentations directly.
Is my presentation uploaded?
No. LibreOffice runs in your browser and the slides are converted on your device.
Why does it not work on my iPhone?
LibreOffice in the browser needs cross-origin isolation for shared memory, which Safari and every iPhone browser don’t support yet. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer or Android phone.
