Post office savings calculator for every India Post scheme
This post office savings calculator works out what India Post’s small-savings schemes pay: the National Savings Certificate (NSC), Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP), Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS), Monthly Income Scheme (MIS), Recurring Deposit (RD), Time Deposits of one, two, three and five years, PPF and the Mahila Samman Savings Certificate. Choose a scheme, enter the amount, and see either the maturity value or the regular payout, with a schedule you can download.
Each scheme is calculated by its own rule — NSC compounds yearly, time deposits are calculated quarterly but paid out yearly, MIS pays monthly, SCSS quarterly, and KVP doubles your money over a notified term. Limits such as ₹9 lakh for MIS and ₹30 lakh for SCSS are checked, and each scheme shows its tax treatment.
Rates are reset by the government every quarter, so the defaults (as of 2026) are editable — check India Post’s current quarterly rate before you invest. It runs in your browser; figures are informational estimates, not financial or tax advice.

Formulas and worked examples
- NSC:
P × (1 + r)^5. ₹1,00,000 at 7.7% becomes ₹1,44,903, matching India Post’s ₹1,000 → ₹1,449.03. - Time deposit: yearly interest is
P × ((1 + r/4)^4 − 1). On ₹1,00,000 for five years at 7.5% that is ₹7,714 a year, ₹38,568 in all. - MIS:
P × r ÷ 12a month — ₹9,00,000 at 7.4% pays ₹5,550 a month for five years. - SCSS:
P × r ÷ 4a quarter — ₹30,00,000 at 8.2% pays ₹61,500 every quarter. - KVP: the term is the time a yearly-compounded rate takes to double money: at 7.5%, 115 months (9 years 7 months).
- RD: each monthly deposit compounds quarterly until maturity; ₹5,000 a month at 6.7% gives about ₹3,56,829 after five years.
SCSS: extension, early closure and tax
- Who can open it: anyone aged 60 or over, retirees aged 55–60 who invest retirement benefits within three months, and retired defence personnel from 50. Deposits are in multiples of ₹1,000, up to ₹30 lakh per person across all SCSS accounts.
- Extension: after five years the account can be extended in blocks of three years, any number of times, at the rate in force on the maturity date (Senior Citizens’ Savings (Amendment) Scheme, 2023, G.S.R. 829(E), 7 November 2023).
- Closing early: before one year the interest already paid is recovered from the deposit; between one and two years 1.5% of the deposit is deducted; after two years, 1%. In an extension block, 1% within its first year and nothing after. Pick Close early after to see the amount.
- Tax: the deposit counts for 80C under the old regime (now section 123 of the Income-tax Act, 2025). Interest is taxable; TDS applies above ₹1,00,000 a year.
Which scheme fits which goal
For a regular income in retirement, SCSS pays the most and quarterly; MIS suits anyone wanting monthly income. For growth with tax benefits, NSC, the five-year TD and PPF count for 80C under the old regime — PPF’s interest is tax-free as well. Parents of a girl under 10 should compare the Sukanya Samriddhi calculator. Bank deposits for the same term are in the FD calculator, and tax deducted on interest in the TDS calculator.
