PDF n-up: print several pages on one sheet
The PDF N-up tool places 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 16 pages of a PDF on each sheet of paper — the layout printers call “n-up”. It is the quickest way to turn a slide deck into handouts, print a long report on fewer sheets, make a compact reading copy, or check the flow of a document at a glance.
Unlike the “pages per sheet” option in a print dialog, you get a real PDF you can save, share and print anywhere, with full control over page order, paper size, orientation, margins, gaps and borders. Pages are placed as vector graphics, so text stays sharp and selectable however small the pages are.
Your file never leaves your device: it is read and rearranged in your browser with the open-source pdf-lib library.
How to put multiple pages on one sheet
- Drop your PDF onto the upload area or click to choose it.
- Choose how many pages per sheet: 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 16.
- Pick the page order (Z across then down, or N down then across), the reading direction and the sheet size. Leave orientation on Auto to get the biggest pages.
- Adjust the margin, the gap between pages, scaling and borders while watching the preview of sheet 1.
- Press Create N-up PDF, then Download PDF. Print it at 100% / “Actual size”.
PDF N-up (Pages per Sheet) features
Six layouts
2, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 16 pages per sheet, arranged in the grid that suits the sheet orientation.
Automatic orientation
Auto compares portrait and landscape sheets and picks the one where your pages come out largest.
Z, N and right-to-left order
Fill rows first or columns first, and mirror the order for Arabic, Hebrew or manga.
Mixed and rotated pages
Each page is measured by its visible crop box and rotation, so sideways pages and mixed sizes sit upright and centred.
Vector quality
Pages are embedded, not rasterised: text stays crisp and searchable and the file stays small.
Live preview
The first sheet is redrawn as you change settings, so you see the result before creating the file.
Which layout should you choose?
Page scale for portrait A4 pages on A4 paper with no margins (Letter is almost identical). Margins and gaps make pages a little smaller.
| Pages per sheet | Best sheet | Grid | Page scale | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Landscape | 2 × 1 | 70.7% | Reading copies and slides — text stays easy to read |
| 4 | Portrait | 2 × 2 | 50% | Proofreading drafts, handouts |
| 6 | Landscape | 3 × 2 | 35.4% | Presentation handouts |
| 8 | Landscape | 4 × 2 | 35.4% | Long documents — same size as 6-up, more per sheet |
| 9 | Portrait | 3 × 3 | 33.3% | Overviews of a whole document |
| 16 | Portrait | 4 × 4 | 25% | Thumbnails and layout checks |
Tips for printing n-up sheets
- Print at actual size. In the print dialog choose “Actual size” or 100% so the sheet isn’t shrunk a second time.
- Wide slides (16:9) fit best 2-up or 6-up on a portrait sheet, or 4-up on landscape — leave orientation on Auto and it works this out.
- Text too small? Text under about 6 pt becomes hard to read. 4-up keeps 11 pt text at 5.5 pt; for reading copies 2-up is safer.
- Save paper further by printing the n-up PDF double-sided, or fold it into a booklet with the PDF Booklet Maker.
- For a visual index of every page with captions, try the PDF Contact Sheet; to combine several files first, use Merge PDF, and to reorder pages, Organize PDF.
What is kept on the sheets
Everything drawn on a page — text, images, vector graphics — is copied exactly. Links, comments and filled-in form fields live in a separate annotation layer that n-up imposition does not carry over, so flatten forms first (print them to PDF) if their values must appear. The page order and size of the original file are untouched.
PDF N-up (Pages per Sheet) FAQ
How do I put 4 PDF pages on one page?
Add your PDF, choose 4 under “Pages per sheet”, check the preview and press “Create N-up PDF”. Each sheet of the new PDF holds four of your pages in a 2 × 2 grid.
What is the difference between Z and N order?
Z order fills each row left to right before moving down, like reading text. N order fills each column top to bottom before moving right, which some people prefer for printed slide handouts.
Will the text in my n-up PDF still be selectable?
Yes. Pages are placed as vector content, so text remains real text that can be selected, searched and printed sharply.
Can I use a different paper size from my PDF?
Yes. Choose A4, Letter, A3, Legal or Tabloid, or keep the original page size. Pages are scaled to fit their cells automatically.
Why are my form entries or comments missing?
They are annotations stored on top of the page, not part of its content. Print the form to PDF first to flatten it, then make the n-up sheets.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The sheets are built in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
