Split a PDF into separate files, your way
The Split PDF tool cuts one PDF into several smaller ones. Pull chapter 3 out of a textbook, separate a bundle of scanned invoices, break a 200-page report into parts that fit an upload limit, or turn every page into its own file — all without installing software.
Choose one of three modes: custom ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, 8 (one PDF per range), every page as a separate PDF, or every N pages for equal-sized parts. When there is more than one result, you can download each file individually or everything at once as a ZIP.
The splitting happens on your device. Your PDF is opened by the browser, the pages are copied into new documents locally, and nothing is uploaded — useful when the file is a payslip, a contract or a medical report.
How to split a PDF
- Drop your PDF onto the upload area or click it to choose a file. Its name, page count and size appear at the top.
- Pick a mode: “Custom ranges”, “Every page” or “Every N pages”.
- For custom ranges, type the ranges you want separated by commas; for every N pages, enter how many pages each file should have.
- Read the summary below the settings — it lists exactly which files will be created and any pages left out.
- Press “Split”, then use “Download all (ZIP)” or the download button next to any single file.
Split PDF features
Three split modes
Custom page ranges, one file per page, or fixed-size chunks — covering almost every reason people split PDFs.
Flexible range syntax
Open-ended ranges like “8-”, the keyword “last”, and even reversed ranges such as “5-3” for pages in descending order.
Live preview of the result
Before you split, a summary shows each output file and warns about pages your ranges do not include.
ZIP download
Many files are bundled into a single ZIP so you do not have to click through dozens of downloads.
Lossless
Pages are copied exactly as they are — text stays selectable and images keep their full quality.
Sensible file names
Parts are named after the original with their page numbers, like report_pages-01-12.pdf, so they sort correctly.
How page ranges work
Each range you type becomes one new PDF. Separate ranges with commas; spaces are optional. Page numbers are the positions of pages in the file (the first page is 1), which can differ from the numbers printed on the pages themselves — a book whose page “1” starts after twelve pages of front matter needs 13-, not 1-.
| You type | You get |
|---|---|
1-3, 4-6, 8 | Three PDFs: pages 1–3, pages 4–6, and page 8 on its own |
10- | One PDF from page 10 to the end |
1, last | Two single-page PDFs: the first and the final page |
1-5, 1-5 | Two identical copies of pages 1–5 |
6-4 | One PDF with pages 6, 5 and 4 in that order |
Which split mode should you use?
- Custom ranges — when the document has natural sections: chapters, separate invoices, or an application form followed by its attachments.
- Every page — for scanned stacks where each page is a different document, or when a portal wants one page per upload.
- Every N pages — for evenly sized parts, for example splitting a 120-page file into 12 files of 10 pages to stay under an upload size limit.
- Need just a few pages in one file rather than several files? Use Extract PDF Pages. Want to throw pages away instead? Use Delete PDF Pages.
Good to know
Every part contains its own copy of any fonts and images that its pages use, so the parts together can be slightly larger than the original. If a part is still too big for an upload form, shrink it with Compress PDF. To put parts back together later, use Merge PDF.
Password-protected PDFs cannot be split until the password is removed, and bookmarks from the original document are not copied into the parts.
Split PDF FAQ
How do I split a PDF into separate pages?
Add your PDF, choose “Every page” and press Split. Each page becomes its own PDF, and “Download all (ZIP)” saves them together in one ZIP file.
How do I split a PDF by page ranges?
Choose “Custom ranges” and type the ranges separated by commas, for example 1-3, 4-10, 11-. Each range becomes a separate PDF, and the summary shows the result before you split.
Is it safe to split a PDF online here?
Yes. The PDF is processed by your browser and is never uploaded to a server, so nobody else can see its contents.
Will splitting reduce the quality of the pages?
No. Pages are copied without being re-rendered or recompressed, so text, images and vector graphics are identical to the original.
Why are the split files bigger than I expected?
Each part must include the fonts and images its pages use. When many pages share the same fonts, every part gets its own copy, so the total can exceed the original size.
Can I split a PDF on my phone?
Yes. The tool works in mobile browsers on Android and iPhone. Pick the PDF from your files, choose a mode and download the parts or the ZIP.
